Formula 1 the 2015 edition ****Mercedes is suing their Senior Engineer**** (post 172)

Huh Scratchhead

Formula One racing's governing body, the FIA, has revealed details of a new Super Licence points system, making it harder for drivers to become eligible for F1 competition.

From 2016, drivers must have accumulated 40 points over a three-year period, with points allocation based on which other motorsport series they have participated in and the level of results they achieved.

Drivers will have also have to be at least 18-years old, have spent at least two years in junior single-seater categories, hold a valid road driver's licence and pass a test on the Formula One sporting regulations. The existing requirement of completing 300 kilometres in a recent F1 car also remains.

*snip*

If such a system had been in place ahead of 2015, new Toro Rosso signing Max Verstappen would be ineligible to race in F1 this year, having accrued just 20 points by finishing third in the 2014 FIA F3 European championship - the 17-year-old's only season of car racing to date.

I know the rain chance was decreasing, but I hope it rains anyway tomorrow, err, today, for the Brazilian GP. Dry might be a bit boring.

wave We just got home from the new Bond movie, way past our bedtime.

What's going on with the funding of the track near Austin? I saw something about there being a decrease in the F1 funding (or the track funding?) but didn't have time to read the article before we left for the movie.

Control of the major events trust fund was moved from there comptroller office to the governor's office in the state. With that move, their advisor had then recalculate the economic impact of out of state tax generation that offsets the METF. Under the revised calculation, COTA only was deemed to have a $19.1 million impact for hosting F1, not the $25 million in the previous years, not the $25 million that was essentially promised by Perry and staff when the race was first set up for 10 years at $25 million. It's rumored that $25 million is the hosting fee of the first year, plus Bernie's usual escalation of those hosting fees, so a 20% reduction in the METF could be there nail in the coffin of this circus. COTA is rumored to have cost $400 million to build and is no where near profitability. Who knows what will happen if they can't pay the hosting fee. Bernie clearly doesn't care, Texans don't want their tax money spent on snobby European sports, etc.

I figure they'll wind up bankrupt, some investor will save them, and they'll at least find a way to host moto GP, FIA WEC, Tudor united sports cars, etc, but probably not F1. And maybe the daily track rental rates will be reasonable for the sports car clubs, and they can be profitable once somebody escapes the construction debt.

Renault have finally confirmed their takeover of the cash-strapped Lotus team after months of dithering, confirming their return to Formula One as a full works team.

The news will come as a huge relief to the 400 staff at Lotus's factory in Enstone, Oxfordshire, which has been running on a shoestring budget all season.

The takeover was in doubt as recently as last weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with Renault and Bernie Ecclestone unable to agree on how much prize money the French manufacturer should receive.

But Carlos Ghosn, Renault's chief executive, finally announced the move everyone in Formula One had been hoping for late on Thursday night.

Ghosn said: "Renault had two options - to come back at 100 percent or leave. After a detailed study, I have decided that Renault will be in Formula One, starting 2016.

"The final details supplied by F1's main stakeholders gave us the confidence to accept this new challenge. Our ambition is to win, even if it will take some time."

I wonder if they'll keep any of the Lotus social media team that made them fun to follow Whee

And in more bizarre sounding news, a watch maker is now branding an engine??

http://www.espn.co.uk/f1/story/_/...e-branding

Quote :
Red Bull has confirmed it will run Renault engines under the TAG Heuer brand next year.

The news brings an end to months of speculation over the team's engine situation and ensures it will be able to compete in next year's championship.

After an acrimonious falling out with Renault over the performance of its engine at the start of the year, Red Bull approached Mercedes, Ferrari and Honda in search of a new supply deal for 2016. Its advances were knocked back by each engine manufacture and it finally agreed a new deal to continue with Renault supply deal ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The news comes a day after Renault announced it would go ahead with its takeover of the Lotus F1 team and return as a works outfit next year.

Popcorn The rest of the article is a good read, if you have the time. Linky [telegraph.co.uk]

Formula One has its latest high-profile espionage scandal after it emerged Mercedes is suing one of its senior engineers for allegedly stealing confidential documents and design secrets as he prepared to move to Ferrari, their main rivals for the championship.

In a case reminiscent of the infamous Spygate affair, which saw McLaren fined $100 million (£62.3 million) [telegraph.co.uk] and disqualified as a constructor from the 2007 championship, Mercedes have filed the lawsuit against one of the key engineers involved in their dominant engine programme.

According to court papers released on Monday, Benjamin Hoyle told the team last May he would be leaving at the end of 2015, before they became suspicious that he was stockpiling data to take to his new employers, Ferrari.

Mercedes claim Mr Hoyle and Ferrari have potentially gained an "unlawful advantage", and they are seeking to stop him moving to the Italian team, or any other, until after the 2016 season.

Don't worry, I'm sure at least one of the drivers will do something silly over the course of the off season.

I had to do a search, hadn't seen anything about them lately, must have just missed it.

Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen will stay on at Toro Rosso for the 2016 Formula One season and will be powered by a Ferrari engine.

Pretty good coverage of the local discussion in the ongoing drama around the state tax incentives nod

http://cityhall.blog.statesman.co...iscussion/

Quote :
/snip....

Casar said that if the city could put the incentive money to better use, he would consider doing so. But denying the track the opportunity for state money would not force state officials to use that money for education or other priorities of Austin officials, he said.

If Austin did not authorize the application, other events in other parts of Texas might receive the incentive money instead, Casar said, and that sales tax money generated here would go elsewhere.

The debate happened after Circuit of the Americas' finances had been making international news.

In November, the American-Statesman reported that Gov. Greg Abbott's administration had decided to reduce the incentive payments to the track for the Formula One race from the roughly $25 million a year state officials had promised to less than $20 million. The governor's office determined that the F1 race was less beneficial to the state economy.

The reduced payments led Circuit of the Americas Chairman Bobby Epstein and F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone to declare the future of Austin's F1 race in jeopardy.
