Anybody ever cut cable with a firestick/roku+kodi? Are you happy with the decision?

My biggest issue will be sports. I dont have any of this yet but know a couple friends that swear by it.

If you've cut cable and done this + a HD antenna are you happy with your decision?

My only caution about using Kodi on FireTV or FireTV Stick is that if you lose internet, you can't even use Kodi to stream local content because the FireTV needs to use the internet to authenticate your password to let you do ANYTHING. It's a bit annoying if, like me, you have an internet provider that is less than reliable.

Setup:

Samsung smarttv.
Roku stick (free when signed up with Roku tv)
iPads iPhones etc

Service
Over the air with simple cheap antenna for al local channels. I live in the northern suburbs Indy area and get all the channels crystal clear. Some in hd some look like old regular def. but I get all football minus Monday night football due to ESPN. When I was in Chicago suburbs I didn't get as many channels clear though. Free.
Netflix streaming ( just cut the dvd service this month) 7.99
SlingTV (awesome) 20.00 can add ESPN for sports for 5.00 more

Never heard of kodi but that how I cut the cord. Had choice of cable but stuck with bright house because there is not max on data. Looked at att u verse and Comcast and buried in the fine print was a data cap and how much per gb after the cap.

Btw avoid the Roku stick if you can because had issues with remote and tech support was useless. Was to send replacement but it's been over two months and still no remote. But the strange things is that we watch tv more on our devices than the big screen tv.

I just did exactly that a couple months ago. I got a Firestick and loaded Kodi with a couple add-ons. I primarily use 1channel. I am not a sports watcher but I was looking to see if I could for a friend who wanted to watch a football game. I was able to find and stream it live with no issues.

You can definitely find a TV program the next day. I have also found a programs immediately after they aired - within the hour. I'm very happy with it.

Depending on the addons installed on what you bought, yes it should be updating with current movies/shows.
Sports are always a hit or miss.

After trying to find standalone internet that's both speedy enough to run the streams AND affordable enough I determined that it's better to just stick with Commiecast till our current 'contract' is up. Although even though we were locked into paying the farkin' rate for two years, the c-suckers kept 'moving' channels to 'higher tiers'. That's the ONLY bad part about these asshole companies at this point.

But if we could find decently fast, reliable and affordable(read: $30 a month MAX) internet, we would dump these shysters in a heartbeat for Playstation Vue or another alternative.

I used to stream Netflix with 3Mbps speeds, worked just fine. Sometimes trying Amazon HD videos was a lot of buffering, but now I'm using 10-20 Mbps and I have no problems. I even use my phone tether at 10-20 Mbps and game/stream and never have issues.

Only problem for me is that it's only Verizon or Comcast here unless I want satellite internet. Verizon told me to pound sand pretty much when they were about to jack my rate up to $30 a month for their measly 768Kbps DSL shit service. That's when I switched to Comcast for either $25 or $30 a month for the first year, then bundled it with our cable lineup(and the rep added HBO for the two years) for $80 something a month.

Yeah. What's even better is that even though we're locked into a contract with Comcast, they've 'moved' about a half dozen or so channels in the last two years. Some I didn't give a shit about(Spike TV, Destination America, Pop), but they also stole SyFy and a couple others I was not amused by the removal of.

What I get a kick out of is when I complained after each removal I was told that 'it is what it is' and that was the end of the story as far as the reps were concerned. Isn't it great that a mega corporation gets to give you shit service and/or take away parts of what you're paying for in a contract and the best response they'll give you is 'oh well'?

That's why I've been looking into Playstation Vue a bunch but as I said the biggest hangup would be finding affordable and decently speedy internet to use it with.Mad

You could get an app like Showbox or Cinebox. Download a bunch of shows or movies when you have good internet connection (like at Work or McDonalds), or queue them to download over night when youre not using the phone. Then mirror it to your Smart TV (or get a mirrioring device like Chromecast or Apple TV for iPhone.)
