Trader Joe's food review thread

31,436 2,810 August 24, 2008 at 07:09 PM in Grocery (3)
I've been trying out various food products from Trader Joe's. Thought a food review thread might be fun. Please do add your own reviews of Trader Joe's foods/products.

So far...

Trader Joe's Chocolate (Product of Belgium): Really nice and a good value too.

Shepard's Pie: This one was a huge disappointment. It was watery, almost like soup and had very little meat in it. Hubby couldn't even eat it. The pic makes it look so good, the reality was a shock.

Chicken Enchiladas in Salsa Verde: Very tasty, have had this one a couple of times. Not bad value either. Cheaper than TV dinners at other stores. *Note: The only pic I could find is not the best, it looks much nicer IRL on a plate.

Chicken and Chile Verde Burritos:
Not bad, would eat again but not as nice as the enchiladas. Would be nicer with a sauce on top.

Chicken and Gorgonzola with Lentils:
Not my thing, found the chicken a bit bland for me, although the lentils were nice.

Mandarin Orange Chicken: This one is very nice and pretty easy to fix. Just put a 1/4 cup of oil in a pan, brown the chicken and then dump in the sauce and serve over rice (sold separately). To make it a little healthier, I took the chicken out of the oil, patted it to remove the excess oil and then mixed in the sauce. You can also bake the chicken in the oven, the instructions are on the package, it's just been too hot to fire up the oven here. Just bought more today. It's enough for a family of four or you can just do half for 1 or 2 people, as it comes with two sauce packets.

Wow, they're opening a bunch of TJ's in the DFW area, as well as a lot of other places. The one on Lower Greenville will probably be close to the Whole Foods that is down there. I wonder how close Aggie Mom is to The Woodlands? Scratchchin
I have an aunt there I haven't seen in 10 years. laugh out loud

I enjoy TJ's potatoes by the pound. They are good, big (that's what she said) and cheaper than most supermarkets.

I gotta say I can't eat other brand string cheese because TJ beats em all. I didn't have a chance to go and bought some other brand at the grocery and it's not as good. Frown But I don't want to waste a whole pack so I must suffer. Sadwalk
Really? I'll have to grab some next time, I like string cheese.

I had that happen with bread. Didn't have time to go to TJ's so I grabbed some bread (Orowheat, IIRC) from Safeway and it just tasted awful. The TJ's Sheppard's Bread is yummy, it has honey, organic wheat and potato flour in it. yummy

I've changed my mind about the Spicy Shrimp Bao, that I had posted about previously. On a second try, they just didn't taste that great.
By far the worst TJ product I have ever tried. I thought they tasted like rotten fish. They made my garbage can smell for days (even though I removed the garbage bag ).

I had a couple uncooked ones, so I took them back to TJs for a return. They mentioned a few had come back already.

Here's a recommendation...
Tried the cookie butter and it was great. Like pulverized Biscoff cookies.

I'll have to try that. I probably like Frigo the best but too expensive.

Mad I can't believe it snowed.

I've never tried Aldi's. But I think I'll just stick to TJ's cheese sticks from now on. I'm picky with the cheeses.

I have to ask, how long does TJ bread keep for? I have been to my local one multiple times, and all their expiration dates are within the next few days, under 4 days time...and this is for all their bread.

If you keep the bread in the fridge, it will last for a week or more. I've had some of the Sheppards bread that was almost two weeks old and it was ok for toast, it wasn't as soft and fluffy so wouldn't have made a nice sandwich but it was fine for toasting. Usually though I toss it after seven or eight days.

I am not worried about it getting hard or what not, but of mold. I have had brea dint he past, where it was out for a week, and mold had already formed.

My new favorite is the Trader Joe's brand of General Tso's Sauce. I think it is called Trader Ming's. Throw it in a crock pot with chicken or meatballs, and serve over TJ's frozen brown rice. yum!

That's why you keep it in the fridge, the cold will retard the growth of mold. Smilie
