Trader Joe's food review thread

31,436 2,810 August 24, 2008 at 07:09 PM in Grocery (3)
I've been trying out various food products from Trader Joe's. Thought a food review thread might be fun. Please do add your own reviews of Trader Joe's foods/products.

So far...

Trader Joe's Chocolate (Product of Belgium): Really nice and a good value too.

Shepard's Pie: This one was a huge disappointment. It was watery, almost like soup and had very little meat in it. Hubby couldn't even eat it. The pic makes it look so good, the reality was a shock.

Chicken Enchiladas in Salsa Verde: Very tasty, have had this one a couple of times. Not bad value either. Cheaper than TV dinners at other stores. *Note: The only pic I could find is not the best, it looks much nicer IRL on a plate.

Chicken and Chile Verde Burritos:
Not bad, would eat again but not as nice as the enchiladas. Would be nicer with a sauce on top.

Chicken and Gorgonzola with Lentils:
Not my thing, found the chicken a bit bland for me, although the lentils were nice.

Mandarin Orange Chicken: This one is very nice and pretty easy to fix. Just put a 1/4 cup of oil in a pan, brown the chicken and then dump in the sauce and serve over rice (sold separately). To make it a little healthier, I took the chicken out of the oil, patted it to remove the excess oil and then mixed in the sauce. You can also bake the chicken in the oven, the instructions are on the package, it's just been too hot to fire up the oven here. Just bought more today. It's enough for a family of four or you can just do half for 1 or 2 people, as it comes with two sauce packets.

Nice idea! I also like the idea of topping it with the smoked salmon. I will have to try that. (I saute mine in a little coconut oil. This is really good too)
The coconut oil I have smells too much like coconut and I associate it with dessert, so I can't cook with it. Frown

I've tried coconut oil in stir fry before and boy was that a bad idea!

I buy extra virgin coconut oil and use it for all my frying, cooking. I don't notice any "coconut" taste. I use it to fry eggs, zucchini, stir fry, etc. Everything! Oh, and fish too. I think it helps to get a very good quality coconut oil. I sometimes use olive oil, but I never cook with it. I just add it after cooking for the taste. Works for my family, anyway. bounce

Currently addicted to the Sweet & Spicy Pecans. drool A bit expensive but oh my goodness my it's soooooo good. $3.99 for a 5oz bag. In the nut section.
Have you tried the candied pecans? They're great on a salad. I love the TJ's spinach salad with dried cranberries, blue cheese and the candied pecans. It comes with a vinaigrette dressing. They sell it in the cold case with all the ready made sandwiches and salads. However, back when I was doing carbs and had the salad quite often, I would just buy a big bag of spinach and the bags of candied pecans, the dried cranberries, plus blue cheese and make my own salad as it's cheaper in the long run than buying the single serving of salad. The bottled dressing is in the cold case too over by the produce.

Crap, I have this in my kitchen somewhere. So what are we supposed to do, just bring it in?

I use something that looks almost like a cheese grater, but it's typically used to shred papaya here... http://www.amazon.com/Kiwi-Pro-Slice-Peeler/dp/B000L8FZMY And I shred the zucchini, cook in some olive oil, and have it with Rao's pasta sauce. drool It has very little amount of carbs per 1/2 cup and is sooooo good. I also top it with some smoked salmon from TJ. Smilie
Just return it to your local TJ's store.

dh bought the veggie ones...black bean perhaps...ACK!!! cooked some, threw the rest out. awfulness. i don't think i ever liked regular taquitos though...too much tortilla for my taste
Iagree Not a big taquito fan to begin with and the TJ's black bean ones are not nice. However their other taquito's are ok, don't recall if it's chicken or beef. DH used to have them from time to time so I'd eat a few too.

The brand I bought from Amazon got pretty high ratings, Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil http://www.amazon.com/Nutiva-Orga...oconut+Oil

It's not that it tastes like coconut, but it smells like coconut and I associate coconut smell with dessert. Must be an Asian thing but we put coconut milk in a lot desserts. I'm not even sure if the Nutiva has a taste, but the scent is definitely overpowering. It was fine when I used it to fry shrimp to make dip, but other than that... It's used to mix in with curry with other coconut milk.

I usually fry with butter. Most of the stir fries I make are with butter.

I saw the packets, they're right next to the ones I buy, but I like spicy stuff so I bought this one, and I've been back 3 times since and bought a pack every time. EEK! I have all those ingredients but the cranberries are too high in carbs for me. I try to stay away from vinegrettes too, I bought some creamy caesar for salad and chipotle ranch dressing to try with some grilled chicken.

On a related spicy note, I'm so upset TJ doesn't carry the spicy edamames, I had to resort to plain. Frown

I don't get how the bananas are mediocre... If you pick 5 large ones for $1.00 it is cheaper than the grocery stores...

TJ's always has organic and non-organic bananas and they are priced accordingly. So that's why I was asking which ones she was talking about. If you saw bananas at 19 cents each, then she probably was talking about the organic bananas being 29 cents each. Smilie

I'm not allowed to go to Carson City or Reno without coming home with some of their lamb for my hubby. Bibby tried to fill one of the little kid shopping carts with the mini pumpkins, I had to limit her to two. She snagged one at the commissary the other day though, she loves them. Somehow a spaghetti squash was in there too, I've never had one so that should be interesting. I need to remember a cooler with me next time I go so we can try some of the frozen stuff. It looks good but we live an hour drive away and in summer I'm afraid it would melt/thaw. I have a list of what has been recommended to try.

I'm going to miss them when we go back to Alaska though.
