Goodbye Keurig...I went to the dark side and now grind coffee beans

70,256 5,366 August 7, 2017 at 12:52 PM in Grocery (4)
I was out of town for a month and just couldn't get past the fact that you cannot clean the internal reservoir of a Keurig. Being the germaphobe that I am and allergic to mold..and ick...I couldn't get myself to use it again after it had been unplugged for so long Stick Out Tongue

I never really drank coffee when I drove a school bus (a cappuccino here or there doesn't count) in my book.

The Keurig made it simple, quick and clean.. no fuss no muss.

I had a reg coffee pot in the cupboard for when relatives came to town but I preferred my weak, sweet coffee pods.
Even some of the medications I have to take can cause acid re-flux issues so weaker coffee and not being dependent on it made sense... *also prone to migraines anyway.

Well, I spent 3 weeks with my brother and my sister stayed over most nights..and both drink coffee religiously..so yes, there I was drinking fresh ground organic coffee beans.. so it was fairly strong.
I know that if I don't wean off it slowly ..weaker and weaker I'll have one heck of a headache..so I gave in to the dark side and bought a bean grinder and organic beans laugh out loud

smh

Yeah, that's because French roast is double burned coffee and all you're tasting is the roasting process and not the coffee Stick Out Tongue
Yeah, I'm pretty much agonna have to agree with this. French roast is nasty, burnt coffee devoid of any coffee flavor other than burned cofffee. Yucky

Most people who sell supposed French Roast don't have a clue, and DO burn the beans. My friends in Baton Rouge know what they're doing, and their coffee is nowhere near burnt.
I'm not convinced. I've NEVER had a French roast worth drinking. Yuck.

If you are referring to Community Coffee French Roast, I've had it. Yucky

In fact, every singe blend of French Roast I've ever had = Yucky

Same, for the most part, with Italian roast. Too dark and burnt.

My preferences run with lighter to medium roast Columbian, Blue Mountain, Kona, and Sumatran (light, not dark) roasts.

Different strokes for different folks, ya know? Peace

You enjoy yours, I enjoy mine, and it seems at least a few other folks enjoy mine as well. Wink

This is true.

Along the same lines, I prefer my steaks medium rare, and my wife likes hers well done. Or, charred to a crisp. Beyond acceptable from a culinary perspective.

Kinda like French roast. LOL

I like some blends that use part dark roasts, but lately anything with a dark roast tends to upset my stomach, and give me heartburn.

A touch of pink works just fine for me. I'm nowhere close to the "wave the steak near the grill" like some are.

If DH preferred his steaks like your DW does I would never cook another steak for him. That's just a waste of money and an insult to the poor steer! He was accustomed to the center being brownish as that's what they used to do to steaks in the UK but I brought him around to the medium rare side pretty fast.

I'm going to try my hand at roasting coffee beans using one of these. From the video it does not look really all that difficult to get better results than anything I could buy.

Harhar

DH was pretty happy when I showed him that steaks don't have to be grey on the outside and brown in the middle. His parents are infamous for their 'cooking'.

I think we all have/know parents like that.

This is better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boUmoMN4QXI

I had more control with a popcorn popper, but the small size only allows me to roast 30g-50g per batch. 10-15min per batch.

So I roasted a few batches both with a hot air popcorn popper and a Whirly Popper. The Hot air popper was stupid easy, you just have to time it correctly and listen for the 1st, and 2nd cracks. Roasts are quicker, and lighter. Whirly pop takes a little more skill to get the timing and heat correct. Batches are larger, and can go darker also. Both tasted better than any coffee I have ever bought. I prefer the Whirly Pop batches because the roasts can go longer and darker.
