this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

I got everyone in my family the R5 model and out of 12 of them 8 people are having issues. The QC on these things are really bad. My own personal one was perfect until today the screen completely stopped working. Had to exchange it tonight.
Can you describe the issues the other laptops are experiencing? Oddly enough TongFang has good general QC but the parts from suppliers seem to be the issue. This ODM is just like Clevo but based in China and not Taiwan. That was one of the reasons I did a fresh install of windows on my machine.

I'm curious if anyone knows who makes this display however.

Seems like mines faulty too in that it dont wake up from sleep
Merely opening the lid or touching the touchpad won't wake it up. you have to press a key

What various issues are you getting. Please describe as it will be useful for us to know too. thanks.

I have personally tested two different R5 ones. I am running clean installed w10 with latest amd chipset and graphic drivers from amd site.

Two issues i have and they were both on the two R5 i tested
1. Once a while, selecting restart in windows will place it in a hang state where after it shows the blue screen saying restarting then it goes to the black screen after that but will not go to the boot screen. So it basically stop continuing on the restart sequence after that. Then i have to press the power button and hold it down to shut off to turn on.

2. HDMI output is very temperatmental. with ext monitor blanking out intermittently. Sometimes happened when playing video with chrome, other time it just happened without chrome. Sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it doesn't.

It's not going to change anything, the max speed is 2400 and a lack of RAM isn't what is bottlenecking the graphics performance
ditto. This thing is limited to single channel ram as well as 2400 so you are not gonna be able to get the best speed out of vega or improve it by adding more ram (unless your applications really need more ram).. also i tested using 2133 vs 2666 ram with userbenchmark. nothing really changed under the cpu and gpu marks. memory bench does obviously shows some difference. Summary: using 2133 vs 2400 vs 2666 memory on this thing won't make any real world difference.

Chi Mei N140HCA-EAC, IPS, CMN14D4 according to notebookcheck

I think i agree the QC on this leaves much to be desired. It seems not so much on the construction itself as i haven't heard anyone says theirs comes undone. I think a lot of the bad stuffs comes in the form of the compnonents being suboptimal. no matter how well it's put together, if the components are craps to start with, thing won't run well.

That truly sux. I might take it apart after santa day. Look for a part number and see. I'm guessing most/all parts have to be off shelf since there cannot be and r and d or particularly unique design concepts for a cheap no name laptop. Merry Christmas to all slickers deplug and enjoy the family
I was digging around at batteries, they are available. You won't find the specific part number, but the tongfang company makes other laptops using the same battery. those are already available, but expensive at around $69 through various sites including ebay.

Quick question. I just got mine. Is the trackpad supposed to be clickable everywhere? Only the bottom half and middle actually click. The top half doesn't not click or go down at all as a button

that's how it is. normal. only the bottom third will correctly have the right and left button. the center might click but it's just left mouse function

My M-142 wakes up when I open the lid.
I now have to tap the space bar once or twice to wake it up after I open the lid.

Got mine today tested it out for about 2 hours playing games as well as browsing downloading updates etc. after everything was updated put in 16gb ram and a new intel modem.

Modem didn't install til I went to driver manager and installed from there.

After that everything seemed fine will test more tomorrow.

This already seems on par if not better than my MacBook prob which cost about 1400. I'll keep an eye and update.

For any1 weary of this laptop or currently having problems... Im sure im probably just saying whats already been said but.

Had nothing but problems with laptop out of the box. Windows would get stuck on black screens, windows would run into errors and not boot. Automatic repair was useless. Installed fresh nvme drive, wlan card, windows os and drivers from motile site and amd(intel for the wlan card) and still had problems.

Flashed bios to 1.05 reinstalled windows and let windows find drivers. Everything has been great for days now.... Not sure whats going on with the drivers off motile site but they caused nothing but issues for me.

Any issues with activation? I'd like to start from scratch too but not sure what happens after i format the drive. Just download windows onto flash, boot to it for install and that's it, or is there more to it now

No issues at all. Just make sure you sign into a Microsoft account so the digital license gets associated with the account. Then just hit troubleshoot after a clean install in the system setting window

What a "hidden gem" you guys found! I mean, there are 13 inch laptops by major brands that are heavier than this! Wow, I just love this, and this line has SO MUCH potential going forward.

I absolutely want to keep this laptop running for as long as I can, and hope that Walmart continues this lineup and does future iterations with better hardware, etc based on our user feedback. If they make modifications like dual channel, and upgrade this lineup with newer hardware as it comes out (e.g, next gen Ryzen)... I mean... Walmart has something seriously amazing here.

Also, I know that SD has several threads running for this laptop, but would it be against the rules if I suggested the idea here to see what people thought if we created a community about these laptops to keep everything organized for us users? It would ensure all of us owners can collaborate on all sorts of owner related things like drivers & show Walmart the strong support we'd have for future laptops made like this. Power in numbers...

Looking through the warranty booklet terms, one concern I noticed is it mentions 1 year of hardware warranty, yet only 90 days for labor?

No laptop manufacturer has that kind of short labor warranty, do they? I've never seen a brand new laptop warranty this short - that's concerning.

I purchased using a card that offers extended warranty benefit, but it only mirrors the existing warranty, so yes I will absolutely get a free additional 1 year of hardware....I'm only getting 90 days extended for labor. That means in total between manufacturer and extended roughly 6 months warranty for labor. Worst case scenario, what's the monetary damage that you guys think the lack of labor warranty coverage could mean for us?

What are people thinking of doing for longer term use of this laptop?

Hoping some of you can weigh in so we can create some momentum so Motile can become what I think it can really become. We have to make sure Walmart continues this amazing value brand and ensure they stand by the product!

Thanks so much guys.

The key is also stored in the BIOS or ACPI table (via UEFI).
