Stocking up for Corona virus

940 257 March 1, 2020 at 10:57 AM in Chat
Hey guys,

Is anyone stocking up on "survival items" in fear of the Corona virus? So far I haven't, but I see a lot of the supermarkets empty from people like that here. Are the fears warranted, should I do the same?

What? Why would they be turned away? Is there a prepper check hospitals do?

Hoarding by local assholes caused me to go without food the other day because there was no way to get any. I'm high risk. If I get sick that's one less bed and team in the ER to help others.

Side note: We have an ER doctor here in critical condition with the virus.

Then the real question is why you run slim on supplies to begin with.

IF there's one thing this has taught me is that it seems lots of people have very little supplies on hand just as a standard practice. I believe I've pointed out in this or other threads that I am the kind of person that doesn't like to run out of things, so I buy on sales and keep it around. Obviously that doesn't apply to milk, bread, etc, but to other staples, paper products, etc. That way if there's a snowstorm and getting out of the house for a few days will be difficult, it's not a big deal.

I realize the panic buying is fearing a longer-term shortage of things (but really, TP? You all know that you can wipe your butts with a towel and wash it, right? I mean, cloth diapers are even still a thing....), but there are plenty of stories like yours. Stories of people running out of formula for babies in the matter of a few days, etc.

A prepper would have already been prepared well before this run on food and supplies. The people buying stuff up are people who weren't prepared so they were not preppers, in fact they are the opposite.

Also I was responding to the person saying something about preppers being turned away or something.

Judgmental much?

I live in a studio apartment. I have a mini fridge with a decent but tiny freezer. I'm disabled so the money isn't there to panic buy. Even if I could there would be no place to store it.

Or worries deeply about their pet fish. [There were a lot of worriers at Chewy apparently]

Your skin if intact is an amazing barrier to most germs. If COVID-19 lands on your arm, you will never know it. As long as you don't transfer it to mucus membranes such as nose, eyes, mouth, ears, (and other more intimate body parts) you will be okay in that place. Washing carefully would take it right off.

If you were really worried, or taking care of a sick patient, then something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Kleenguard...01CDUSOF2/ with gloves, a respirator---N95 or better--, and eye/face splash protection would go a long way as long as you remember the mucus membrane rule and follow good procedures. Since that suit does not have a hood, you would have to be a little extra careful in decontamination. (Which goes a lot better with a second person helping)

Nothing like this is foolproof. I've been through training cleaning up this powder: http://www.cleaningdetective.com/...on-powder/ you would know how fallible one can be even with the best equipment. I've seen people swear they did not touch their face and with a UV light there is glowing proof they did with this training aid.

I got the Insignia instapot for $29.99 on BF ... this thing will do rice, beans, split peas and so on. Just a thought.

Thank you. I'll consider it.

A lot of people are in newer micro units which average less than 200 sq ft with no stove or oven so I'm grateful to have more than that. I have a good supply of toilet paper and am learning to make my own bread.

I ordered a ton of flour and yeast and suggest others do the same and learn to bake.

You've linked to that guy before. Everyone should just accept the fact that they'll get it and will survive... or not. All the hoarders say the same shit: "We don't know when this will end!" All the toilet paper and food in the world won't keep you from getting it. Facepalm

The first vaccine trial starts tomorrow.

I've got mild COPD, and have been prepping for this since the first week in Jan. Funny thing is I had been trying to order a second Lenovo C940 from Lenovo since Christmas, two had defective screens but got a keeper on the third try.I always opted for overnight shipping. That was Dec. 23. On Jan 6 I went to the Doctor for my yearly, and they said I had a fever. That night I was sick. It lasted about 5 days then I got better. I remember talking to my lenovo sales person who got me a quote and he said this C940 model was being manufactured in Wuhan China and that was causing delays. Wuhan was where the virus started. If this virus can live for up to 9 days on surfaces, I am wondering that maybe I have already had it? I always get a flu shot and never get sick during the season, but this year I got bit with something.
When the test is available to see if you have already had the virus, I am gonna get it done.

I feel bad for the natural cleaners, people are not buying, I guess they won't kill the virus.
One hack I know is use eye glass wipes, the main ingredient alcohol. Bleach wiped in all stores in my area.

I just went over to the pool/lawn/garden section and got pool bleach. 10% vs 6% so watch your hands.
