Forget the haters! My wife and her aunt have something similar. If the performance is the same, It's a great deal for less tech-savy uses, like home study, or for media consumption. Windows 10 works just fine once you switch out of S mode. Streaming services work, Zoom works, light browsing works (seen the wife with 10 tabs open in Chrome and Edge just fine). They pay bills, do online shopping, write emails - all that stuff. The kids play Roblox and Minecraft. Wife hooks up to the TV to do her workouts. The specs are all low-end, but it is $150.

So what are the cons? It's not thin, nor light. The camera is hot garbage to me, but the wife uses it for Zoom and hasn't complained yet, so there's that. The screen is ... meh. I mean, our phones have better screens, and I'll bet a $150 phone might as well. At first I was concerned about the 4GB of ram, but honestly, it hasn't been a problem YET. I'm sure, in the future we'll have to revisit this. I would like an ethernet jack, but it's hard to tell because they only use them in the house and we have good wi-fi. If we go on vacation, it might be a different story. Also, 128GB of storage is nothing these days. You will run out fast if you have a lot of media. But this problem isn't exclusive to this particular model, as the majority of laptops are in the same boat. So add the cost of external storage (SD card, external drive, cloud) to the overall price. Finally, the battery life is not good. You'll have to pay more to start getting decent longevity.

I'm telling you guys. Avoid these lower end Lenovo laptops. Already purchased and returned two similar models. RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded. Even running basic tasks on Windows 10 is hard for these to handle, especially with only 4GB of RAM.

Thanks for the link, there is some useful info there. Apparently there are 2 different connector cables - one for 14" AMD model 14ARE05 and another for 15.6" Intel model. Wonder whether the cable NBX0001SX00 that supposes to work for 14ARE05 also works for 14IML05 ?

My laptop arrived late today, Immediately opened it up and confirmed that there is only a 2.5" drive cage inside. One needs a cable to hook up a SATA drive to the motherboard JHDD1 socket. For those of us who have extra SATA SSD lying around we need to figure out what cable we need and where to buy.

The only possible hang up to that is the existing SSD has a set screw to secure it laterally to the motherboard. (Also, see pages 37-38 of the H/W Maintenance Manual). Unless the longer M.2 is twice as long and aligns with the empty screw hole further back, you'll either have to find an alternate means of securing it laterally or leave it unsecured.... I don't know how likely the SSD is to slipping out of the slot (probably fairly UN-likely), but if the drive is secured there's zero chance of that happening.

So far it seems like a fairly competent notebook for basic tasks, although I'm going to upgrade the ram and the ssd. It's been awhile since I've changed out an ssd and it was sata. Crucial and Intel were my go to's then. Any particular brand that would be recommended for the nvme ssd?

In the video posted before it looks like there is a nut under the m.2 ssd that can unscrew and be moved the the hole further away so that a longer ssd can be used and secured with the set screw.

I'm toying with the idea of picking up another one of these laptops and adding a 30 pin is 14" lcd to see if it works.

Dumb question. If I want a bigger hard drive, it is just a matter of pulling out the existing NVME and pushing into a new one? And then install an OS like Ubuntu (I don't want Windows)? There is nothing tricky about swapping drives is there?

Check manual page 5 which listed models for the manual.

The model from Lenovo forum site IdeaPad 3-14ARE05 Laptop - Type 81W3 shares the same manual as IdeaPad 3 14IML05 81WA ours. "You would need PN 5C10S30041 HDD CABLE L 81WA and PN 5B40S22008 HDD Bracket L81W0" was the response. I googled and couldn't find much info.

^ Thanks for that. I was trying to find a similar Ideapad model on Lenovo's site that had a 2.5" SDD to see if I could do the same thing... come up with the part number(s).

5C10S30041 HDD CABLE L 81WA
5B40S22008 HDD Bracket L81W0

I found a German site that can provide the cable and bracket. But they're 40 Euros... each lol:
