Forget the haters! My wife and her aunt have something similar. If the performance is the same, It's a great deal for less tech-savy uses, like home study, or for media consumption. Windows 10 works just fine once you switch out of S mode. Streaming services work, Zoom works, light browsing works (seen the wife with 10 tabs open in Chrome and Edge just fine). They pay bills, do online shopping, write emails - all that stuff. The kids play Roblox and Minecraft. Wife hooks up to the TV to do her workouts. The specs are all low-end, but it is $150.

So what are the cons? It's not thin, nor light. The camera is hot garbage to me, but the wife uses it for Zoom and hasn't complained yet, so there's that. The screen is ... meh. I mean, our phones have better screens, and I'll bet a $150 phone might as well. At first I was concerned about the 4GB of ram, but honestly, it hasn't been a problem YET. I'm sure, in the future we'll have to revisit this. I would like an ethernet jack, but it's hard to tell because they only use them in the house and we have good wi-fi. If we go on vacation, it might be a different story. Also, 128GB of storage is nothing these days. You will run out fast if you have a lot of media. But this problem isn't exclusive to this particular model, as the majority of laptops are in the same boat. So add the cost of external storage (SD card, external drive, cloud) to the overall price. Finally, the battery life is not good. You'll have to pay more to start getting decent longevity.

I'm telling you guys. Avoid these lower end Lenovo laptops. Already purchased and returned two similar models. RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded. Even running basic tasks on Windows 10 is hard for these to handle, especially with only 4GB of RAM.

Looking at the bracket... the german one looks like the cage that's already in the Ideapad.... the connector tab on the lower left corner looks identical to the lower left corner of the cage from the photos Psycho-G posted earlier. I think the german photo is looking at the bottom of the "bracket", which unless I miss my guess is just another copy of the "cage" that we already have.

Which means... that seems to be the wrong part.

Lol.... Lenovo sells them on their Encompass parts site. Smilie

Cable:
https://lenovo.encompass.com/item...C10S30041/
5C10S30041, HDD CABLE L 81WA

Bracket:
https://lenovo.encompass.com/item...B40S22008/
5B40S22008, HDD PARTS; RAILS, SCREWS, BRACKET, ETC.,

Both are $15.95. Both are OOS with an estimated ship date of 12/15 (30 days). No photo for either part, but at least they exist and can theoretically be ordered.

And.... I just searched the entire Lenovo support forum using the part # for the cable, and I came across this...

This is the complete parts list for our 81WA Ideapad 3 14IML05:
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/hk/e...compatible

The cable # matches the thread above ... 5C10S30041
The bracket # does not ... 5B40S21978

However, the photo for the "bracket" again appears to show the same "cage" part that we already have in our systems.... so I'm thinking it may be possible that you only need the cable to connect the SSD to the JHDD1 port, and 4 screws to secure the SSD to the computer. If I had a spare SSD laying around I'd crack open my Ideapad and check the fit... but to my uninformed, unintelligent eyes, if the mounting bracket Lenovo is selling is already provided, we shouldn't need to order a 2nd one. I'll attach a photo of the "guts" of the Ideapad from Psycho-G, and one of the photos from Lenovo's site, you tell me... are they not identical?

Is it better to have 2 x4gb of memory vs 4gb and 8gb as I see people are doing here.

Does dual channel come into play here or does it not matter in this case?

Yeah. Go to the parts link, click on "Compatible", then under "Commodity Type" select HDD PARTS. It'll yield two hits. The -30041 Cable ("HDD CABLE L 81WA") and the -21978 Bracket ("HDD Bracket L 81WA")

Where
I noticed SD sometimes loads pages in a different format depending on how you navigated to them. (Can anybody explain why that is?)

Try this:

https://slickdeals.net/f/14451953-starting-november-11th-lenovo-ideapad-3-149?v=1&page=10

I think it's the "v=1" in the URL that changes the format. I don't know why it wouldn't always load that way.

Thanks. Was able to grab 2 locally just now. Think there's still 2 left for anyone in Minnesota. Inver Grove Heights location. All others are out I think.

Thank you found it, if you check the pictures the label on the cable says: "NBX0001SX00" very interesting.

Using a 4x8GB configuration:

Since this intel processor supports Flex Memory Access, the first 4GB between the two memory sticks will be run in dual channel mode at the slowest speed and timing between the two sticks. The other 4GB (of the 8GB stick) will run in single channel mode and can be used as swap memory.

Using a 4x4GB configuration:

I've read anecdotal accounts that there may be a distinct benefit to running the same size, frequency and timing between the memory sticks to achieve dual channel. It seems that the benefits however would be realized in very specific scenarios.

There are a crap ton of Aliexpress and Ebay listings (for very similar-looking cables) if you type in "Lenovo ideapad SATA cable." Aliexpress listings are really cheap. While none of the listings appear to match the model number listed above (5C10S30041), it seems unlikely that there are that many different cables, and therefore I'm sure some of the listings are for compatible cables. Cross-referencing part numbers for something this obscure, however, might be difficult.

Dumb question. If I want a bigger hard drive, it is just a matter of pulling out the existing NVME and pushing into a new one? And then install an OS like Ubuntu (I don't want Windows)? There is nothing tricky about swapping drives is there?
Well, I got mine delivered today. This was an easy upgrade to make except I broke off a small part of the back panel clip and it doesn't close perfectly anymore. I had a 4GB stick of ram laying around and I had bought a 500GB NVME Western Digital Blue for $54 off Amazon. I just unscrewed the existing SSD and replaced it with my new one and then I popped in the ram stick into the empty slot. Booted up and then I installed Ubuntu.

I am typing this from my new $200 computer after the upgrades. It flies actually and is very quiet. I have watched a Youtube video and am browsing in Chrome while watching TV. I started a Zoom session and tested out the webcam (OK). The screen brightness is fine and the viewing angles are nowhere near bad. This was a great buy in my opinion.

Agree, this is a great buy. A full fledged windows laptop with 12 GB ram and a decent processor at ~170 is a screaming deal. Screen is alright, I see the difference between this and my surface book but then it's 10 times cheaper! Perfect if you need extra remote learning laptops!
