Forget the haters! My wife and her aunt have something similar. If the performance is the same, It's a great deal for less tech-savy uses, like home study, or for media consumption. Windows 10 works just fine once you switch out of S mode. Streaming services work, Zoom works, light browsing works (seen the wife with 10 tabs open in Chrome and Edge just fine). They pay bills, do online shopping, write emails - all that stuff. The kids play Roblox and Minecraft. Wife hooks up to the TV to do her workouts. The specs are all low-end, but it is $150.

So what are the cons? It's not thin, nor light. The camera is hot garbage to me, but the wife uses it for Zoom and hasn't complained yet, so there's that. The screen is ... meh. I mean, our phones have better screens, and I'll bet a $150 phone might as well. At first I was concerned about the 4GB of ram, but honestly, it hasn't been a problem YET. I'm sure, in the future we'll have to revisit this. I would like an ethernet jack, but it's hard to tell because they only use them in the house and we have good wi-fi. If we go on vacation, it might be a different story. Also, 128GB of storage is nothing these days. You will run out fast if you have a lot of media. But this problem isn't exclusive to this particular model, as the majority of laptops are in the same boat. So add the cost of external storage (SD card, external drive, cloud) to the overall price. Finally, the battery life is not good. You'll have to pay more to start getting decent longevity.

I'm telling you guys. Avoid these lower end Lenovo laptops. Already purchased and returned two similar models. RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded. Even running basic tasks on Windows 10 is hard for these to handle, especially with only 4GB of RAM.

I don't understand how people are trying to pimp out this cheap $150 starter laptop.

It's like trying to pimp out your newly bought base honda civic with you switching out the LEDs headlights, add a spoiler, switch out rims, add in sport seats, etc. At the end, it's still a honda civic. It's still going to be a basic engine that gives you subpar performance. Just buy a better car.

I hope no one takes offense by this post. I just hope people aren't going to treat this computer as like the computer they are going to use for the next 3-5 years.
Lol, yeah I get what you're saying. For folks like me, I'm looking to overcome the two biggest amd easiest/cheapest to fix shortcomings... RAM and storage. My intent is to use it as a backup PC for non-intensive processing applications... MS Office, maybe as a portable Zoom device because my peers are tired of seeing my kitchen by now.

But also because its kinda fun to engineer a solution using "house money"... we only have $150 worth of skin in the game, plunking another $75/100/125 to turn it into something more capable that wont be just a cheap throwaway PC in a year or two makes it worth it - at least to me. I've spent $150 on the system, $60 on a 480gb HDD and cable (adding 4x more storage on top of the tiny 125gb), and I'm either going to drop $30 or $55 to bump the RAM to 12 or 20GB. For $90-115 on top of my original spend I should have a decent machine that can do what I want without struggle, and I'm still under what the machine normally cost.

I'm not disagreeing with your post - some of us might have lost sight of the fact that we're polishing what might be a turd here. But as long as we keep that in mind and dont go overboard with the upgrades, I think there is still some cost-effective improvements to be had.

Went to Walmart yesterday to pickup a different laptop and someone in front of me was there to pickup 25 of these in 5 different orders. Can't believe they allow someone to purchase or hoard that many laptops.

That was strange. It only allow 2 for one customer online (not to mention in one order) right? How can 1 order contains 5 of these?

Currently I believe limited to 1 for each customer online (which should be reasonable).

I should've taken a picture of the 2 shopping carts they used to carry all 25 laptops. The CSR had to go in out of the storage room 5 times for each order, and I was losing my patience.
I don't think they were teachers or school personnel, seems like resellers to take them abroad.

How many persons in total?

Maybe you can report to Walmart Corporate via email, including the exact time and store #. They would have record for this specific store about the suspicious orders so they could catch it if there is really a breach to the policy by store staff/website staff.

I don't understand how people are trying to pimp out this cheap $150 starter laptop. This type of laptop is a perfect starter laptop for little kids or for anyone who want to use it purely as a second computer aside from their primary one. At the end, the CPU is bad and it won't even handle most of what we do or use it for. This at the very best is a backup computer or a starter computer.

Even if you are cheap on the initial price, but are willing to make upgrades later, there's always financing options or just straight up by a slighter high end one. And I'm not talking about $1,000 ones, but $300-500 range and trust me, there are plenty of those options with great CPU, RAM, webcam, etc.

It's like trying to pimp out your newly bought base honda civic with you switching out the LEDs headlights, add a spoiler, switch out rims, add in sport seats, etc. At the end, it's still a honda civic. It's still going to be a basic engine that gives you subpar performance. Just buy a better car.

No offense taken. I think each of us has our own reasons for buying this laptop and upgrading it, but I agree there's potentially a point where the benefit isn't worth the cost. For example, while the extra disk space and RAM are easy for me to justify because for my use cases, I need the extra disk space and the RAM will come in handy. The CPU isn't great, but it is good enough for my needs. I can't justify buying a web cam because I'll use my phone, tablet or primary PC for video meetings. I also can't see upgrading the screen unless that's something done as a fun hobby project. However, for some it might also be a hobby project...it can be more enjoyable to build something yourself than to buy it as-is. You get the benefits of the end result along with the satisfaction of customizing something to do what you want. There may be compromises, but for the total cost, it's still not a bad deal and they get to enjoy the journey as well as the destination.

For me, it was kind of fun trying to track down the right cable so I could add a SATA drive and collaborating with others in this thread to figure out what worked. And getting the base model for $150 for my kid to use as his first real computer to learn with and write code for Arduino and LEGO Mindstorm stuff...that's something I would have had a hard time spending $300 or $400 on, but is a no-brainer for $150.

And the fact is, while you and I wouldn't spend a bunch of money to trick out a Honda Civic, there are plenty of people that do and consider the result to be worth the time, money and effort. It would be a waste of money for me, but it works for them.

BTW: As another confirmation, this is the SATA cable I ordered...just installed it and it worked great. Had a 250GB SATA SSD that was lying around and is now working in this laptop.

While the product description shows the wrong item #, the pictures and the box I received correctly showed "NBX0001K210", which apparently is the correct part since it worked.

Confirmed the cable in wiki worked. I got a warehouse one at $8. Now waiting for the $11 4gb 2666mhz ram that Amazon has lost and hopefully they don't deliver in time and I get it free when it arrived later.

Plus an old SSD, I would say a less than $200 notebook to do tax, banking, store important documents and backup is a pretty good deal.

Trying to separate sensitive transaction from day to day web surfing, downloads..,and stuff that get your computer corrupted.

Remember to press F2 to go into bios to disable the lid open power on and uninstall various Lenovo softwares.

I searched Amazon and couldn't find any 4GB 2666MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM for $11, could you please post the link ?

Edit: just found it. Is this the one you bought for $11.95,

HAHA, same here! Got a 4GB stick for $11.95. It should arrive today. I also seperate my sensitive transactions (bill pay, online banking, tax, etc) from day to day stuff and this laptop will be replacing the 1st gen i5 laptop that I have been using for those duties.

How would you get it free if it's late? My Amazon Prime deliveries are always late, do I need to call in to complain?

Thats the one I got. Ordered Monday night and estimated delivery is today but i haven't received a shipped notification yet. Will post update once I receive and get it installed. Was quite happy to have found that listing; was going to order the 4GB version of the Crucial mentioned in this thread but noticed it was 1Rx8 configuration which means 8 chips on ram stick. The laptop's existing ram is 1Rx16 which means 4 chips and this stiick matches that configuration; and it's cheaper! Not sure if the x8 config would have caused any performance issues in terms of enabling dual channel mode but it doesn't hurt to match configs with whats existing on the laptop.

But once you plunk $75/100/125 into it, it's no longer $150 worth of skin in the game. Its $225/$250/$275 + time. IMO, if you are going to spend that much, get the $250 i3 HP or $299 i3 Lenovo with 1080P IPS screen mentioned in the other slickdeals threads. They both have larger RAM and Storage space... and did I mention a i3.

Don't discount the performance of the i3 in those laptops compared to the pentium in this laptop. That i3 is a true 10th gen CPU (ice lake) and run circles around the 10th gen pentium (comet lake) in this laptop; which essentially is a rebranded, tweaked, and optimized 5 year old 6th gen CPU (skylake).

No offense and not trying to step on anyone's toes; just trying to save everyone some $$$ and provide the best value for their hard earned money. IMO, if you are going to pump another $100 or so into this laptop... the other laptops in the $250-$300 range provides much better value and longevity.

Amazon sometimes offer refunds to me for items not shipped in time, guess I am using the app too.

So for the ram, if they don't shipped by today, I get a refund and they assumed it is lost. But usually I get the product much later even up till 1 week later.

But they finally found it and now is in the distribution center.

Something like that happened to my wife last year. She ordered some $400 exercise thing for xmas and it was supposed to be delivered on the 23rd (as an xmas gift to herself). USPS sent a notification its as delivered that morning, but when I checked (2 or 3 minutes after they said it was delvierd) it wasn't there. USPS figured they must have dropped it off at the wrong house by accident (holiday chaos) but didn't know where, so Amazon refunded the full amount and said we could keep it if it ended up getting delivered.

The next day a neighbor brought it over to our house and said it was left at his front door the day before. Double bonus Big Grin
