I'm considering swapping out the NVME drive for a 500 gb and doing a fresh win 10 install with usb drive boot. I'm not incredibly technically inclined. For anyone who did this are there any pitfalls? Should I be concerned about backing up the lenovo drivers? Thank you!
I swapped the NVMe driver for a 500GB WD drive: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

The upgrade process is pretty easy. More than one video has already been posted in this thread you can watch for pretty detailed steps on how to swap the NVMe drive. One of the more recently linked videos even walks you through the process of moving the standoff from the shorter position to the longer position.

If you are going to put in an unformatted drive, then you'll need a bootable USB drive with the Windows installer to install Windows clean. The other option is that, if you have an external case for the NVMe drive, you can clone your exiting drive to the new one before installing it and then just boot off the new NVMe drive and the existing Windows install after the swap (that's what I did). Then you'll have to either expand the Windows partition to use the full drive space (or you might be able to do that during or after the cloning process).

The most difficult part of the process might be removing the bottom of the laptop, and that's also pretty easy as long as you are careful to pull up the edges all around the case before trying to remove the bottom lid.

Also make sure to discharge any static electricity and/or ground yourself before touching the components. Don't work on electronics when on a carpeted surface, especially in cold and dry weather when it is easy to build up a static charge.

Thanks Darkon. That's actually the drive I have in my cart. I think I found that in one of your previous threads. I cracked the case to put a ram stick in. It was a bugger but like you said once you get it started it's easy. Thanks again for the help. Repped.

Just saw this post...not sure if it is a good drive, but it is a bigger drive for a good price: https://slickdeals.net/f/14593696-intel-665p-series-m-2-2280-1tb-pcie-nvme-3-0-x4-ssd-83

Sweet! Fingers crossed. Smilie

Mine was just delivered 5 minutes ago. There was no tracking info on the website - apparently the local store grabbed on from inventory and they sent some dude in his car to drop it off on my porch. I guess that works.... I'll fire it up and make sure it's not DOA. Smilie

Took a few days to get but insalled a Crucial 16GB 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) and shows 19.8GB of 20GB available.

Fort those that are going to reapply the thermal paste. Is the processor soldered to the motherboard or is it replaceable/upgradable?

Thanks

Thanks for letting us know it works! I don't have any plans on going beyond 12GB, but good to know it is possible in case I find an extra 16GB module lying around.

BTW: For those that are still looking to pick up one of these laptops, I saw a few come in (and then quickly out) of stock earlier today, so they are still available once in a while if you are persistent. If you see it say there is one in stock, keep trying to add it to your cart. Once in your cart, you may get an out of stock message during checkout, but it may stay in your cart so keep trying to check out and eventually it might work (at least it worked for me the last time I tried).

Installed a "NBX0001K200" cable ordered from eBay for $5.13 shipped out of FL. Confirmed this cable fits our laptop and works perfectly. No affiliation with the seller. They seem to sell a lot of refurbished or pulled parts.

Thanks. I just bought the same thing from same seller (I think). The seller was "xyverx".

At the end, the CPU is bad and it won't even handle most of what we do or use it for. This at the very best is a backup computer or a starter computer.

$300-500 range and trust me, there are plenty of those options with great CPU, RAM, webcam, etc.

You don't seem to get it at all. The CPU is actually just fine for most of what many people do (I've been using this thing all day, including right now), and doubling or tripling the price (or more) is just not an option for some people and uses. Yes, we've seen 10000000 posts about how a $500 machine is better than a $150 one, and we don't dispute that. But bashing the CPU does NOT mean this machine isn't perfectly fine for us. You are entitled to your opinion but not your own facts. I don't need "great" CPU, a ton of RAM (adding more for $28 though), or a nice webcam, no matter what you say.

If you don't want this laptop, move on already, no one is making you try it. But none of that makes this an usable machine or a poor choice for me or many other people. I didn't expect a world-beater, and it has greatly exceeded my expectations.

This post is stupid. Few bash the machine few are fixated with upgrading it. Few fixated with defending it. I ended up getting two of them. One for my daughter and one for me. For 150 dollars the machine is a steal. Stop bitching so much about it.

I will say that for $30 more than last year's Lenovo 14w $129 BF deal, this laptop's specs are a whole lot better than the 14w. The only thing it has going is the 14" 1080p panel. This 6405u processor and ootb 4gb memory and nvme ssd makes it a lot more usable than that one running an antiquated AMD dual core and emmc.

HAHA, same here! Got a 4GB stick for $11.95. It should arrive today. I also seperate my sensitive transactions (bill pay, online banking, tax, etc) from day to day stuff and this laptop will be replacing the 1st gen i5 laptop that I have been using for those duties.

How would you get it free if it's late? My Amazon Prime deliveries are always late, do I need to call in to complain?

Thats the one I got. Ordered Monday night and estimated delivery is today but i haven't received a shipped notification yet. Will post update once I receive and get it installed. Was quite happy to have found that listing; was going to order the 4GB version of the Crucial mentioned in this thread but noticed it was 1Rx8 configuration which means 8 chips on ram stick. The laptop's existing ram is 1Rx16 which means 4 chips and this stiick matches that configuration; and it's cheaper! Not sure if the x8 config would have caused any performance issues in terms of enabling dual channel mode but it doesn't hurt to match configs with whats existing on the laptop.
How this RAM working for you mate ? Still deciding if i should go with 4 or 8GB. Any suggestions ?

How were you tracking stock? the in-stock alert function ceased to work for me. Not sure if there's something that works in the background.
