Amazon has the HUION KAMVAS Pro 12 Drawing Display Tablet on sale for $199 when you "clip" the $30.00 coupon. Item is sold by the official HUION seller account, shipped by Amazon.

Warning: there is another version being sold by "Huion" (not all caps) for $2 less, but the seller has far fewer ratings than the official page and the location address differs (China vs Delaware). Uncertain whether products sold by them would be warrantied, so check the "Sold By" carefully. Adding to the cart from seller HUION triggers an extended warranty offer, whereas adding from seller Huion does not.

FYI to linux users, HUION drivers are not supported. Also some youtube video scouring, they have a proprietary design on a USB C cable so that many wont fit in their port hole. Kinda weird they'd do that.

HUION tablets are great cheap alternatives, but they don't work for linux which is their only major downside.
I'm a high school graphic design teacher, & while keyboard & mouse is fine, it is a great introductory tool, & can mimic brush movements. Brush strokes/movements on a mouse vs a stylus will yield different results, & you can apply "pressure" to a stylus, where as a mouse you can not. (Think grabbing a graphite pencil...when you hold it down with light pressure, it makes a light stroke/mark. Now when you apply a bit more pressure, it gives a darker stroke/mark/impression. You'll also get the affects of tapered strokes. Think thin to thicker lines, created from pressure setting & use of the stylus/tablet combo) Also, ever since you've been born, its only fitting and natural to use something our hands are accustomed to, in this case a pen/pencil, hence the similar feeling and shape the stylus.
Prior to me becoming a teacher, I did product and portrait retouching on a Wacom tablet.
A great alternative to to this tablet is Parblo [amazon.com] too. Good luck.
I've been using drawing tablets for the past 5 years as well as ipads/android tablets.
Some advantages to a display tablet like this one:

Runs off your computer, thus can ran computer-based software like full Adobe Photoshop and other drawing software. Typically performs better.
The pen is made specifically for drawing and would normally have more drawing support (different nib textures, pen pressure, tilt controls, eraser end, buttons). Apple pencil has some of these features but is costly itself (about half the price of this tablet).
Etched/laminated glass creates a more tactile surface, mimicking paper. IPads and android tablets are smooth glass, which feels slick to draw on (less control). You can, however, use a matte screen protector.
Color accuracy is usually better (ipads/android tablets normally saturate their displays).
On-display buttons allow for customization of common drawing shortcuts (undo, cropping, etc). The tactile sensory is better than on-screen shortcuts.

Disadvantages:

Runs off your computer thus cannot be standalone and portable (unless used with a laptop, but you'll have a bunch of wires everywhere). Your computer also has to be decently spec'd if you want the tablet to perform well.
Software can be tricky, even with higher-end brands like Wacom.
Takes up more desk space, especially with wires.

Ok, last question folks. I have access to a Wacom Intuos drawing tablet (the kind without the screen) for free. Should I just go with that? It's not a Cintiq obviously, but still a Wacom. I really like the idea of drawing directly on the screen, but free is free and Intuos seems a well-reviewed product. Any thoughts? It's older tech.

If you can get it with a pen I would go that route. There is a great Youtube video (Y1t9LMajwQ) on why starting artist do not need a Cintiq, but a $15 used tablet is fine to start. You get used to looking at the screen while your hand is on the tablet and its less strain than looking down. You do not need more than 512 levels or tilt to start. Those features come in handy later when you have grown in your skills.

What if I'm an art teacher and have been drawing for a while? We have a bunch of these Intuos models that sit unused. A previous teacher ordered them and they didn't get much use. Pens are included. I think my neck would appreciate less strain. I'm 44 and have had some whiplash accidents in the past. I was thinking I might appreciate the pressure sensitivity more on the newer units.

Neck strain gets me every day. I've raised my monitors as high as possible AND placed big textbooks under them. I cannot work looking down for long times. A product such as this will not work for me

Don't worry about pressure levels too much. Even the highest resolution (retina) screens have have less than 500 pixels per inch. Standard displays have 96. Brushes don't usually vary that much in size, this means the pressure resolution is almost always sub-pixel. This means a color blends with a neighbor pixels. Even a very old pen precision of 512 would cause subpixel rendering difference from one pressure step to the next since the pen pressure resolution is almost always less than a pixel difference (on almost all brushes).

High pressure levels are only needed for professionals that need (feel they need) sub pixel blending that is as precise as possible. I would challenge someone to show me that anyone could notice the difference in step up and down in pressure of a 512 vs a 4000 level pen

I got one of their cheaper ones. Absolute garbage and won't be buying their products again.

I don't really see the benefit of buying this when the XP-Pen tablet is essentially the same thing and it is always this price.

Even more the 15.6" version of the XP-Pen is only about $50 more than this.

With so many professionals in this thread. What is the best cost vs performance for a stand alone tablet? My daughter is 13 and has been using a Kindle Fire 10 for the past 2 yrs but we would like to get her something nicer with better app support. I'm leaning to Ipad Air or Samsung S6 but I would rather be closer to a $300 budget than $500 that those are. I've noticed someone say to get an older gen Ipad but how old is too old? I'm not really an Apple fan but I understand that the graphic arts world revolves around Macs.

I don't think this Huion would be very valuable to her right now because of the lac of portability. I like the idea of being able to sketch wherever she is rather than be tied to a computer.

TIA

I've decided to wait for Black Friday to see what kind of deal I can get on the XP-Pen 5.6 Pro. Hopefully it will be $299 like last year, or less.

One thing that makes me nervous about these Chinese drawing tablets: They have some really shady practices when it comes to directing/censoring reviewers, so I hope I'm getting something durable/problem free. Can't pay for a Cintiq.

Tried the Wacom Intuous 3 today at school. It was a bit to archaic for me, even if the drivers I downloaded were a good match.

My daughter is in 9th grade and is extremely good at art. She actually won 1st place in two state competitions last year and has an old digital drawing tablet that does not have a screen. I would like something that is good an portable because she loves to also draw while in the car. Anything out there that is recommended? I want to get a jump on X-mas this year.

I had the 15.6" version of this. The pen wouldn't register. I tried to troubleshoot it and also had a different pen, same problem. I returned it and got the XP-Pen 15.6" V2. Everything is fine with the XP-Pen.

I don't know if you realize it, but it looks like even the Wacom are using a proprietary USB-C connector.

I ended up buying the 13 non-pro because of the comments on these reddit threads and something else I found that I can't find again, maybe it was an Amazon review.

I found a bundle with 13, stand, glove, and 20 nibs for ~$235 with 10% off coupon.
