Great deal on a mid-range gaming laptop! I got it for $622 with military pricing but students and teachers can benefit from a discount as well. However, the i5-9300h and 2060 combo is known to have some throttling issues so you may have to undervolt the cpu and apply a curve to the GPU to control the temps. Other than that, this is a pretty solid deal for a 2060 laptop.

I have the Gateway and it's a great deal when on sale. With that this Lenovo has a better screen but a LOWER refresh rate (which matters for gaming), 4GB more memory and 250GB larger SSD. The different CPU installed gives the Gateway a slight bump but they are pretty close. On the Gateway, I installed an extra 8GB of ram to bump it up to 16GB for $35 and installed (2) 500GB NVME SSD in it for $110. On the Lenovo I probably wouldn't touch the ram but I would probably throw another 500GB NVME SSD into it if there is a slot available. With that being the case, the Lenovo wouldn't need as much money for upgrades at least for my use. The screen discrepancy is probably the deciding factor as the Gateway refresh rate will be better for high end gaming. HTH

I always thought I wanted a gaming laptop, because I have a weird fetish for portability. But, they arent worth it. Reasons why:

1. They all sound like jet engines whenever you do any intensive task

2. You cannot run the graphics card at full power on the battery. This was news to me. And it will still sound like a jet engine when on load. For this reason, gaming laptops dont make sense, unless you have a real reason for it having to be portable. With todays work from home situation, for most people. You are better off with a desktop, and a long hdmi cable, and/or portable itx build, if you really want to move it around your home. its cheaper and you get more and full power pc.

3. Very little upgrading path. Once something breaks or needs an upgrade, you are kind of screwed and at the mercy of your warranty.

What does make sense, is a very light weight, long battery life Ryzen or new Intel 11th gen build with hdmi 2.0.

Lenovo doesn't deal with instant cancelation. You have to wait for it to arrive, then request a no fee refund slip to return it. there is no restocking fee.

Thank you - I ordered one but am having second thoughts. Good to know I have until it arrives to make up my mind, which will be after February 9.

Which laptop is better:

https://slickdeals.net/f/14782786-gateway-creator-series-15-6-fhd-performance-notebook-amd-ryzen-5-4600h-nvidia-1650-gtx-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-xbox-game-pass-for-pc-hd-webcam-cortana-windows-10-home-599-00?v=1&page=5

My novice take is that this Lenovo is better for gaming but the processor on the gateway makes it better for overall speed/performance for non-gaming tasks. Although maybe the extra 4GB of RAM in the Lenovo makes up for the weaker processor.

Not everyone has good reliable power.

Also, there are times where you use a laptop for things other than gaming, and times where battery life matters.

you dont get a gaming laptop if you dont game.
people who get a gaming laptop because they want the portability around the house (gonna be hard taking an itx build and a monitor around the house: from bedroom to living room to basement) or even work that requires traveling (want to see how you can travel around the country or the world with a gaming capable desktop).
any laptops have very little upgrade path but thank goodness Intel fell asleep for the past 6 years that there's very little advancement in terms of CPU processing power that AMD was able to catch up and even surpass them.

GPU, you are looking at ~50% better with RTX 2060. R5 4600h vs Intel i5 9th gen will be par more or less for single threaded operations (most games) and AMD twice the processing to Intel because of the number of cores and threads.

There obviously are cons of gaming laptops against gaming desktops. That said, there are plenty of reasons to get one.

Most people are aware you can't game extended periods on battery. That doesn't mean the portability isn't useful. I take mine to my parents when I visit. I play games like Civ6 or Xcom2 on my couch or when flying on an airplane. I can use it on business trips. Have used it occasionally at a video game in person tournament. I own a separate gaming desktop, doesn't mean I don't also want a gaming laptop.

For those wondering how capable this is, I downloaded Flight Simulator 2020; and the recommended settings were "high" and performance is buttery smooth. There is a setting 1 tier higher I've not tried since I just stuck with what they recommended. From what I gather that's one of the more demanding titles so I think this machine is perfectly capable.

As far as battery life, it doesn't have integrated intel graphics you can switch to; meaning it runs the rtx2060 all the time. This translates to somewhere between 2-4 hours of battery life depending on the task; but again I don't think most people get a machine like this for battery longevity. They'd be more apt to get an ultra mobile 13' laptop like an XPS 13 or MacBook Air.
