HOWEVER it doesn't support HiDPI (high definition) scaling on external monitors. It's been a pain for myself and many users. In practice this means that the image on an external monitor is grainy. There's a thread on MacRumors discussing the issue and it's widespread with all M1 powered devices.
the naysayers don't know what they're talking about. this is the best laptop i've ever owned. I own an iPhone and haven't used a laptop regularly for a few years, but signing into my apple ID allows for a pretty seamless transition with the touch ID. this thing runs cool all the time. there is literally no grill or way to get to the innards anywhere, which means no fan to block and overheat your shit.
i know i'll get the downvotes from the pc master race, but their downvotes sustain me.
if you have the budget for a great laptop with equally great battery life and iOS integration, buy this. if you don't, or you're salty about macs, then don't.
i like the laptop.

The m1 is a big fat chip, at the cutting edge of chip fabrication and what seems like at least *8* years more advanced computer science architecture (just look at the thermals and power budget). The iGPU is about a GTX 1050, so way better than anything intel ever could produce.
M1 is a base model, but in Apple land where you pay minimum of 750 retail (Mac mini) for a base computer. And Apple would ideally like buyers to be very happy with the base model. They know if you have money to burn, you'll upgrade, keep coming back, buy Apple services etc.
Macs do have the integration aspect down pat. It's the UI that I'm trying to get over since this is the first Mac that has me looking hard at it. On Windows, I click Start ,start typing the first few letters of the app and the list of applications zeroes in for me to launch. On a Mac, I click Finder, then click Find to do the same. It's just one more step, but things like not being able to have context menus everywhere with a right click just doesn't seem to be very efficient for productivity.
This price is tempting. I just wonder how much difference 16GB would make for video editing.

I can try testing out since I have other monitors at work, however I remember way back even with an old (2010?) Mac mini I had problems with my Dell monitor, something was just wrong with the font aliasing that I could never resolve.

In choosing a monitor for your Mac it makes a lot of sense to get something better than 1440p. That being said I've seen 1080p on an m1 Mac and it looked great for $110 with no noticeable defects.
TLdr:
Mac OS is written for Mac like displays.

This is definitely an annoying issue (typing this on my new Macbook M1)
