Featured Comments

Good deal - common sale price for this item, hit the FP a few months ago at this price. Previous comments do note that it is noticeably faster than standard HDDs for gaming storage.

Other common FAQs:

Shuckable?

No, it's soldered

Can I use this with my *INSERT NEXT GEN CONSOLE HERE*?

Yes

Can I run games off of it?

Yes, but not your next-gen games; only previous-gen games, but even at that, it's always recommended to copy the game to the device's internal storage before playing

Is it really worth the extra money?

Up to you, but it has been noted that it is actually a bit faster with game transfers.

Is it shuckable?

This is a good deal. You can store your PS4 and PS5 games on here. You can play PS4 games off of it but not PS5 games.
But... Can it be shucked?

Honestly I've been tempted to get one of these for games that I play on my main console upstairs and the system I have in the basement. Much easier than unplugging and rerouting cables for my 12 TB hard drive.

Is this hard drive OK for storing movies on a win 7 laptop. Description says win 8.1 or higher. Thanks.

It's perfectly fine with win 7.

I'm pretty sure these are SMR drives and not PMR/CMR, in which case the performance plummets after a bit of use. Can anyone verify?
I assume everything is SMR unless it specifically says PMR/CMR. I thought only the writing performance was impacted with SMR, but isn't the reading performance the same between SMR and PMR/CMR? I'd assume most games are reading most of the time while playing them, and can't a SMR drive write fast enough to keep up with your typical 100 Mbps download stream? One definitely would never want to use a SMR for the OS drive.

Which is a better drive for long-term data storage.

WD Black 5TB P10 Game Drive Portable External Hard Drive for $100
or
WD 5TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive for $120

both have a 3-year warranty.

You mean this one for $100? EDIT: Just minutes after I wrote that the EasyStore is no longer on sale.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-e...Id=6406512

I don't know of any differences between any of these drives except the EasyStore has a 2 year warranty.

Yeah and I still remember the pixel 3a xl I got for $24 at Walmart. But obviously you're not going to be able to get it again. So no point in remembering that.

If you haven't upgraded your PC in awhile and are still on USB 3.0 or earlier, either don't buy this, buy it and save it for later, or be prepared for insanely slow transfer speeds. I bought this to replace a 2TB My Passport that was a good 5-6 years old. Transfer speeds are terrible. The average speed I've been getting is like 25 Mb/s. I even tried using the USB 3.0 cable than came with the My Passport. I was getting speeds up to 100 Mb/s to start off, but then the bottom fell out to the 25 Mb/s of the included cable. I understand my PC is old, but this should give me speeds equivalent to the 5-6 year-old drive I'm replacing at the very least.

The selling point is supposed to be its speed, but I highly doubt it is any faster than any other portable mechanical hard drive.

Was in Walmart 30 mins before closing and came across a 5TB WD Passport Portable for Mac in the clearance section. Open-box on closeout. It rang up for $76.29. Didn't notice at first as there was so much junk all over the place. The unit was missing the small USB cable, but otherize works fine. Reformatted to NTFS in about 30-seconds from Mac OS. I can't say there will be more available in your area, every store is different.

Not true USB 3.0 is perfectly capable of actual data speeds in the 400MB/s range (theoretical max is 625MB/s) far exceeding any HDD. Windows is very finicky with USB transfers, I've have similar issues to what you describe. I had a external drive that would bounce around at 20MB/s then after reinstalling windows it went back to normal. I found bitlocker to also cause issues on some hard drives. Testing the same drives in linux and they had no speed issues at all on the same PC, port, cable and everything.
