Featured Comments

Good deal - common sale price for this item, hit the FP a few months ago at this price. Previous comments do note that it is noticeably faster than standard HDDs for gaming storage.

Other common FAQs:

Shuckable?

No, it's soldered

Can I use this with my *INSERT NEXT GEN CONSOLE HERE*?

Yes

Can I run games off of it?

Yes, but not your next-gen games; only previous-gen games, but even at that, it's always recommended to copy the game to the device's internal storage before playing

Is it really worth the extra money?

Up to you, but it has been noted that it is actually a bit faster with game transfers.

Is it shuckable?

This is a good deal. You can store your PS4 and PS5 games on here. You can play PS4 games off of it but not PS5 games.
But... Can it be shucked?

Honestly I've been tempted to get one of these for games that I play on my main console upstairs and the system I have in the basement. Much easier than unplugging and rerouting cables for my 12 TB hard drive.

I just bought this for $112.50 after discount. Haven't even received it yet can I get a price match?
I contacted newegg support and they sent me a $12.50 refund. Was a bit difficult to explain the price difference to them with promo codes and they didn't refund tax difference. At least it worked out, their process just seems to be fully manual and they had to invoice me a negative balance. Quite a strange process for a big retailer like newegg.

Got this for my son on his birthday to use with his Dell G5 desktop and he absolutely loves it. I tried to contact Dell support about what kind of internal HD I could add and they were absolutely no help at all so decided safer to go with external and have no regrets at all with buying this one.

This thing again. Wasn't it $90 last time?

It's just a USB hard drive people, don't get too excited. No magic secret sauce that makes this a better "game" drive than any other USB hdd. And yes you can use it on computers if you want... it's just a snazzy looking hard drive.

Personally I was using a USB 2TB WD elements drive externally on my PS4. It worked fine but was pretty slow on some games and transfers took forever. I got an external Samsung SSD for $100ish, it's only 1TB but much faster... and that is on a launch PS4. My goal is if I can ever score a PS5 is to move that to the PS5 for my PS4 games. USB C on the PS5 should be worlds faster than the USB 2 on the PS4.

For a Mac you probably want to look at drives with thunderbolt interface. This one is USB. I suppose it will work on a Mac, assuming you have a USB port or an adapter cable.

Probably not super great for video editing.

Ive been researching external drive options lately, and consensus seems to be to use nvme drives if doing heavy video work as speed is better. You could go external nvme enclosure and get an nvme bare drive or buy a full external drive like the sandisk extreme or extreme pro portable ssd. If needing 2TB or larger price starts getting well into the $250+ range. I actually just ordered the Samsung T7 1TB for $143 which I believe actually is an nvme drive inside, and rated at getting 1050 write speeds. I read it might be good enough for video editing, but I'm just going to use it for a secondary photo library storage that I'll occasionally run Apple photos app against.

If you need even faster speeds I think you'll have to look at tb3 or tb4 external drives or enclosures which are even pricier.

Whichever way you go you'll probably want to go with usb c capable (as opposed to usb 3.0 or usb 2.0) or tb3 or tb4 since it's a Mac (depending on what ports it has)

Seems a great value for the price (5TB of external storage for $100).

Can someone talk me out of getting this in place of a 2TB WD MyPassport Ultra that I paid ~70 for the other day?

I'm only planning on using it to backup photos/files from a late-2012 MacBook Pro so don't really need USB-C that the WD has as this generation MBP has only USB 2.0 ports.

Is this hard drive OK for storing movies on a win 7 laptop. Description says win 8.1 or higher. Thanks.

Just a side note, you can still upgrade to Win 10 for free with Win 7.

It's good for storing videos, not so much for working off it. Get a 1TB thunderbolt nvme ssd instead for that.

Edit; thunderbolt seems to be ridiculous price something like this is just fine https://slickdeals.net/f/14967767-crucial-1tb-x8-external-portable-usb-3-2-gen-2-type-c-ssd-124-95?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1
