This device is carrier-unlocked, meaning a SIM card and service plan must be purchased separately. The tool below will show you expected compatibility with networks around the world. This should be used as reference and does not guarantee compatibility.

I have this phone, and I like it because of the headphone jack.
They got a pretty nice, quad dac in here, with amplification to drive some pretty powerful headphones that other devices or bluetooth wouldn't be able to.

Dual screen is a nice extra, I do use it much more than I expected to - it's nice to have completely separate screens for multitasking and watching videos.

Finally, the battery is incredible. It's advertised to have a 4000mah battery, but the most interesting thing was that when I first bought it (over a year ago), my accubattery app showed a 4500mah battery estimate. Basically, the battery was larger than advertised, and it definitely showed in longevity. Even today, an entire year later, I'm at 4200mah effective capacity, and can go 2 days of pretty regular use without even thinking about recharging.

Downsides? Not much for this phone alone - it does everything I need, from music, to apps, to games, to just browsing the web.

THAT SAID: there's one thing to keep in mind about this phone - these days you can get the LG V60 thinq, basically the successor to this phone, with the dual screen accessory, for around $400. The deals for the V60 may be fewer and further between, but I've seen it at costco for $400 with the dual screen, and it took all of my willpower to not buy it then and there. Wait a bit, and you'll have a chance to get what's basically an upgrade in every way over the G8x, for around the same price. (this was the deal btw https://slickdeals.net/f/14502593-costco-t-mobile-lg-v60-5g-dual-screen-smartphone-no-new-line-required-399-99?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1)
Don't blame LG (entirely) - it's the carriers. This is one of their latest scams to locking ~your~ phone to their, one network, to prevent portability, and using their paying customers like bargaining chips, so they can make potentially make money from, or have leverage with, other carriers over roaming/tower agreements. I know I'm generalizing here, but VoLTE licensing and compatibility is ridiculous. Can you imagine, building a communication protocol/tool for the ~global phone networks~, in this day and age, that's proprietary and incompatible with everyone else? When something doesn't add up, follow the money.

No 5G?
No active updates?
LG No longer makes cell phones!

I think it is a hard pass at this price. Maybe for sub $300.00.

I'd be inclined to believe that it's an Accubattery reading mistake rather than a bigger-than-advertised physical battery...

but at the end of the day if you get good battery life that's what matters!

Your comment made me check: my unlocked LG V35 is still on Android 9 even though the AT&T locked version and the Korean version of 10 were released over a year ago. Near as I can tell, LG never did anything for the ULM or NAE versions.

I would not count on ever getting an update for this LG G8X. But I paid $165 from the Cricket V35 deal last year and the phone is fantastic at that price point.

It's not just the jack (although it's ridiculous that so few flagship phones have them now) but LG has high quality DAC/amp tech in the phone, it's like having a high end music player built into your phone.

I understand what you mean about 5G. However the facts are that most advertized "5G" phones are practical jokes. There are three bands. Verizon has the fastest microwave version (a reason other unlocked phone brands dont work with Verizon) but its only in larger cities and signals dont go through walls. Then you have the slow bands used by T-Mobile and AT&T. Those speeds are often slower than 4G. The most desirable bands would be the medium ones and they dont get auctioned until next year. This LG phone and the "5G" phones aren't much different. The "real" 5G phones/networks are still in the future. Nobody should drop a lot of money on a phone they currently think is 5G.

Most of the US population live in big cities or burbs of big cities.

I tend to keep a phone for 3 years... I would not get a new phone unless it was 5G.
