EDIT: I replied to the e-mail stating that the only reason I'm returning items is because they are defective and not as described. They responded that they wont ban my account but may restrict me from returning items in the future (just as bad in my opinion). I'll update further

I worry about that myself. I don't really return much, but a lot of my subscribe and save items get returned by the USPS or UPS since they leak in transit due to Amazon not packing detergent, energy drinks, dishwashing liquid, etc very well. If Amazon has an automated system counting all those returns, I'm screwed.

It's more about getting rid of customers who aren't profitable. If you buy 1000 $5 widgets with no returns over 3 months, then suddenly return a $1500 camera and a $700 tv, you'll be on their shit list
edit: it's also an issue if the next guys who buy your crap keep saying it's defective or the wrong item.
edit2: how often the item you purchased gets returned for the reason you are returning it is also a factor
How many orders and returns. have you done in the last 6 months? I can't figure out if it's a ratio, dollar amount, or what.

It's liability. If your account is in the red, it doesn't matter how legit your returns are
