I meant an older circa 2015. I upgraded once with an adapter but not sure if it can handle 1TB.

You better get a Ssd from that list, not every Ssd works ok with adapter. What I learned was the WD sn750 had issues , but no one mentioned it. Anyway, the point is that a cheap SSD works better than the expensive ones
To add to this: I can't speak for compatibility with any random adapter, but OWC makes a 1 TB and a 2 TB drive for that range of MacBook Air, so the computer itself doesn't have issues with that capacity. Link if interested: https://eshop.macsales.
