I see no mention of any $5 coupons, it's a $50 Award. Not sure where you're getting the $5 coupon info from.
*A $50 Award will be added to the Primary Membership account 24 hours after enrollment and must be used/redeemed by 30 days from the date of Membership enrollment. If not redeemed, Award will no longer be available. Excludes Supplemental Memberships. This special Award offer is separate from the My BJ's Perks® Program and does not alter its terms.

One last advise, I use my CitiBank card which has a Virtual Credit Card Number generator to limit the dollar amt to $50 & set a 11 month expiration to avoid the automatic membership fee renewal being charged to my card. Citi Double Cash is my #1 card. Love this feature.

why not just turn the auto renew off and be done with it. or even set it expire right after your signup is done. why wait for the next 11 months?
I've been both a BJ's and Sam's member - I basically do all but a very tiny fraction of our shopping at BJ's. If you are a couponer, it's an ideal club to belong to because not only do they allow MQ's, they also have their own coupon system which you can game (or rather, they don't code their POS well, or heck maybe they know about it but don't care). For example, last weekend I was able to "combine" 3 separate coupons for $17 off 3 Suave products; I chose a 3 pack of body wash (4 kids in the house means they go through a lot of body wash) for ~ $9/ea. So for 3 packs (9 bottles) I wound up paying like $10 AC, plus I'll get another $0.50 in rewards. These kind of deals are hit and miss, but happen frequently.

Where can I use my Awards? [bjs.com]
Awards can be used in-Club at the register and on BJs.com in $10* increments.
At this time, Awards cannot be used at BJ's Gas stations.
Again, the rewards given by this promo seem to function similar to those earned natively, so I imagine they'd fall under the same rules, but I don't know that.
