- 5 years after their dangerous journey across the post-pandemic United States, Ellie and Joel have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming. Living amongst a thriving community of survivors has allowed them peace and stability, despite the constant threat of the infected and other, more desperate survivors. They killed off one of the main characters from the first game. A few idiots that were critical of the story sent death threats to the director and some of the voice actors. Regular fans that had issues with the story were lumped in with those rotten apples and labeled racists, homophobes and misogynists. Naughty dog also hired a shell company to copyright strike anyone that was talking about the story leaks before the game came out. Even people that were just discussing the leaks and not showing any images or video. That's just my two cents from my perspective. I just don't see how attacking your customers is good business.

Do not take anyone seriously who claims that this game "too woke" or whatever other ridiculous criticism they have. That's just intellectually lazy and a worthless drive by comment.
It's best to first:
1) Play the first game if you haven't
2) Play this game and form your own opinion without the influence of others
Even in the event that you don't like where the story goes, I can promise you that from a gameplay perspective, you're playing the best third person shooter ever created. It's literally unrivaled.
This was one of the few games that I immediately restarted replaying after it was finished.
It's extremely brutal, dynamic, intense, and full of impressive AI systems that work together beautifully.
It's one of the most accessible games as well (tons of settings to customize the experience for the disabled and non-disabled).
The gunplay, sound design, music, Naughty Dog's motion matching animation tech, facial animations, graphics... all superb.
I felt that they made a game that's a generation ahead.
Days Gone was the next game I tried playing through after beating this. After playing it once, I ended up uninstalling it. Not to say that it was terrible, but TLoU really ruined it for me, lol...
To give some additional context, I had just beaten RDR2 before (which I think is arguably a better looking and more technically impressive looking game). TLOU part II blows it out of the water in the gameplay department and it's not even close. Visually they both look God-tier, but I give the edge to RDR2. TLoU wins on the facial animations and overall responsiveness easily.
I played both on PS5 and I played TLoU Part II on hard and survivor+ (will probably replay again at some point because the encounters are that fun).
I also think the story was very good, especially when you compare to most other games across all genres. It's still very character driven, which is in-line with Naughty Dog's method of delivering memorable experiences told through the narrative.
The game is all about perspective and everything is not so black and white, which makes it a bit thought provoking when putting certain characters decisions in-scope.
I can understand why some people may not like it, but I hope that you're smart enough to distinguish from the posters here who have their own agenda in preventing you from playing this.
Don't miss out on one of the best games ever created.
Play it and form your own opinion.

That being said, this is still a fantastic game. The gameplay is more fun than the original, and the visuals are phenomenal. Even better looking on old gen than most current next gen games. The ending to the story is fantastic, although that's obviously just a personal opinion. There are also plenty of great shocks and twists to the story to keep you interested despite the liberal foreplay, much like the first game. Don't let the naysayers bring you down, this game is still worth your time and among the best games out right now at this price, even if not nearly as great of a story as the first game. Although let's be honest, there really isn't another game that has a story that good.
if you haven't played it, buy it now and play it...
this from a person that loved the first game. this was a perfectly fine natural progression of that game, in the fictional world it's set in. i enjoyed the growth of the characters after the events of the first game.

It is a great game from a technical standpoint. The detail that is in this game is unmatched and it is truly the best looking triple A title from any studio.
The main problem I have is that the main character is flawed and one of the strongest themes is how far you would go for revenge and how that leads you to just lose everything. Almost to try to prove their point the story pushes those consequences to the extreme. This means you end up being forced to do abhorrent deeds and then you are later made to feel bad about the fact that you did it because news flash if you do bad things then usually it doesn't end up well for you. Eventually near the end I was screaming at Ellies poor choices because you can see the train wreck that is coming. You see that she is smart and resourceful and you want to believe she can change but she never does throughout the entire campaign. It becomes a draining and for me an empty experience because Id like to believe that even if I were utterly self consumed with rage and vengeance I wouldn't have made the ridiculous choices she made. In the first game Joel makes one of these decisions that I didn't agree with but it's very justified and you can't blame him for making that decision because for him the risk was worth the reward. In this game Ellie repeatedly makes these similar decisions however the situation is really different because she isn't at all justified and the risks she takes is not at all worth the reward. I really I don't need my stories to end all happy and rainbows. But even in any other setting this game is hard to swallow. Imagine if you were playing a Superman game where Superman was an angsty teen and makes stupid decisions and then bad things happen because of it. It betrays the character and becomes a slogfest because you're just left wondering why they made the story design decisions they did.
TLDR great game visuals and mechanics but questionable story decisions that make the game difficult to play
there's literally only 1 "L" couple in the game and vague reference to a "T" person, that's discussed once but never actually said.
that's only 2 letters out of the alphabet mafia.
it's like people either didn't pay attention or didn't play the game.
it's an impressive amount of hate to get hung up on.

And don't listen to the haters. I paid full price for the game on launch day and don't regret it for a minute. The story isn't quite as good as the first, but it's still outstanding. The only thing I had issues with is that the game can be pretty brutal and draining at times because of the story and the violence. I'd recommend breaks every 2hr or so.
For $20 it's a no-brainer.
