I have been playing with the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook (v1) for a little over a week now.. granted it's intermittently. We also have like 8 macbook devices in the house (mix of airs and pros for work and pleasure) and a crazy number of windows devices.

So far, for $310 the Chromebook is a glorified web browsing system with a 4K touchscreen. Macbook airs (2015+) outperform the chromebook in all but one way. You can draw on it and touch the screen.

Okay, the 4K screen looks amazing in some youtube content as well, but I am really struggling to keep it even at that price. It also has touchID (or whatever Google calls it).
Shame that hasn't changed much. For my kids to have a cheap machine that's mostly secure, I'd consider it. Again though, I'd never buy one for more than $300. I remember when you could snag one for $120-150 (not sure if that's still the case) but that's about what that OS is worth to me. It's the new netbook.

Can you use the student discount twice on the same account? I don't think so but might be wrong.
yes, but not on the same color/SKU.

I definitely wouldn't make the purchase again, but I just needed it for online classes and loved everything about its design. Even the little things like the "one-finger open" and how it doesn't slide around when you open it (my only complaint on this MBA).
Fair enough. I've never played with a Pixelbook but most things by Google directly are solid quality. If I ever go back to Android, it'll be a Pixel for sure.

My understanding is the only difference this gen is MBP has a fan and the touch bar , MBA doesn't. Thermal videos show a few degrees Celsius difference under stress tests and benchmarks but not really significant. M1 runs really cool and external temps on both units never got over 40* Celsius from what I saw.

Edit: Everything I've seen has said MBA is the better purchase this Gen unless you do photo editing or want Touch Bar.
Also the MacBook Pro has all 8 cores unlocked while the air has 7 cores available on its M1. But yeah, from what I've seen the performance difference is negligible… so unless you really want the touch bar (Have it on my 16" and "meh", I wouldn't pay extra for it) and the active cooling, MacBook Air is a better deal. Also, I miss using a MacBook Air because the wedge chassis I feel is actually more comfortable for typing than the MacBook Pro brick shape… but 16" screen is sweet lol. Just got my grandparents the Gold MacBook Air yesterday to replace a 10 year old MBP.

Same experience here. Spent 26 minutes on the phone, most of which on hold while the representative "looked into it", to be told that since I already bought at "such a discounted price", there would be no price match. I said I would just buy a new one and return the more expensive one, and she said sure, you can bring it back to the store. What a waste of money and resources for Best Buy to end up with all these open box laptops instead of just refunding the $50!

Edited to add: post typed up on the MacBook Air that will be returned to Best Buy after the new cheaper one gets delivered on Friday laugh out loud
Yeah it's really dumb.

I have one at the $800 price waiting for in store pick up at one store. I ordered another for pick up at a different store at the $750 price.

I was thinking of returning the $800 one as soon as I picked it up but couldn't I just wait for the order to cancel itself?

I bought this at Costco last week for $900. Only reason I decided to pay the extra $100 was because I got the Costco Citi Anywhere card, so between the extra one year warranty from Costco and the two from Citi, it gave me a 4 year warranty... I've since found out that the extra 2 years from Citi works anywhere (thus the "Anywhere"), so I may have to return it and pick it up at BB for the $150 savings...

Hi, thanks for your response. I checked on the apple website to compare and it looks to me the difference is just speaker, microphone, battery size and a couple things that you had mentioned.

But I am still lost about the 2020 iMac, MBA and MBP all has the M1 processor... so wouldn't all of them perform about the same, if not similar? Like all the devices should be able to do the same task, without showing any lack in performance? This the part that kind of hold me back... since I do want a powerful personal laptop (for time if i want to do any video/photo editing, or anything that the 2020 iMac 24in is not capable in doing smoothly).
If you do light editing, I'm sure it's fine. The MBP screen is more color accurate. All the M1 macs do about the same including 8gb vs 16gb except with video encoding in which case the 16gb is faster. (Though not as much as you'd think)

I think the new models this year will show a clear processor power bump but whether it's $250 worth is what I'm debating. I'm guessing no as most Macs hold up well for 5-7 years and that $250 I can save for my next Mac. Rumors are that MagSafe is coming back though and the TouchBar may get left behind.

I bought one last week for 1k

I did return an open box I bot for $750 after a fudged price match but the warranty only had 6 months

my logic was that the $250 for the 6 months extra warranty would be worth it in the end
512 gbs are still 1000. I bought one too. Was hoping they'd shave $50 off like these 256gb ones. Oh well, still very happy with this!!
