AC1900 is 3x3 1300 5G + 3x3 "600" 2.4G. In reality, no clients really support the higher 256 QAM rate on 2.4G. It's the same general performance as an AC1750 class for normal clients. 1300 5G + 450 2.4G real world spec.

AC3100 is 4x4 + 4x4 config, but like the AC1900 it's Turbo/nitroQAM and is effectively AC2400 "Real world" spec. 1734 + 600 for a majority of clients connecting to it.

AX82U is a 4x4 + 2x2 router using a cheaper SoC for its main CPUs. Theoretically it should perform better than the 68U in 5G, but performs worse in practice, especially with legacy AC clients.

https://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rt...-review/2/
https://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rt...er-review/

The main CPU on the 68U is a significantly better A53 dual core and helps with VPN/read/write times over the cheaper 67xx family of BCM SoC.

The AX3000/AX5400 Asus routers are more on the end of marketing hype. You're buying a low end SoC paired with a higher end 5G "4x4" chip (half radio disabled on AX3000). Youre paying for the "160mhz" 5G.

160mhz bandwidth isn't practical for real world wifi and drops off into 80mhz territory over 15 feet. Also degrades SNR and requires DFS channels.

Edit 2: AX68U performs better in real world use/distance. Only upgrade from here is the 86U, 88U, 89X. If you want a little bit of everything and a good price, the 86U is your only option.

Edit: AX68U is AX2700 3x3 1800 + 3x3 861. It's the direct AX upgrade to the old AC1750 spec.
Probably a great router, like all ASUS products I've interacted with. However, personally, I'd prefer the RT-AX86U. Pull an old modem or router out of the closet and trade in at Best Buy for 15% discount. RT-AX86U was $212 for me.
I bought this router about a month ago to replace my TPlink Archer C7. I selected it because it was the cheapest router I could find that I could plug an external hard drive into and get 100mb/s reads and writes. It improved my range and speed throughout the house. The upstairs, which is farthest from the router, was getting around 90mb/s and now I get pretty much get the max speeds (300mb/s) provided my ISP. I'm far from a network expert but I'm pretty happy so figured Id share.

Perhaps it needs a firmware update?? Which router did you have before this one?

I got mines yesterday and for those that care this doesn't have holes for mounting on the wall.

I had the RT-ACRH17. I pay for 400mbps and was getting 90 max. Now I get at least 300, sometimes 420mbps! This thing is super fast and reaches my entire 1800sq foot house.

But it's been going offline every 2 hours. Updated the firmware yesterday. I just reset it now. Will see..........

Mine has been going offline every 2-3 hours as well. Firmware is up to date. Speed and range are good, but looks like this one will have to be returned if it keeps going offline. Really wanted to upgrade to this one, coming from 2 flashed tm ac1900s.

That sucks man. Try to reset it. Login to the app and hit set to default. Then you'll have to set it up again. Yeah I really want to keep this but having to reboot every 2 hours is ridiculous!

Those of you having issues with your AX68u routers might want to go spend some time on the related snbforum:

I replaced netgear R7000 with TPlink AX3000. So much better, range is much longer. I an now get good connection far outside of the house.

I am in the market for the AX86U router which I've heard great things about. Hopefully the trouble on this thread with the AX68U is just a few isolated instances.

I have updated the firmware to Merlin. It's supposed to be more stable. We will farking see!
https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

Download: https://sourceforge.net/projects/.../RT-AX68U/

Also turn off WPS.

And I bought the Asus rog gs-ax3000 from Walmart for $159 as a backup in case my fix fails.

I had issues out of the box with the default firmware. No internet detected basically.

I updated to the Merlin firmware. After that I factory reset it and also power cycled my modem. It's been a day and no issue yet.

I would also disable WPS if you don't need it. Sometimes that causes issues for me in the past with other routers

Yeah so far I'm going 5 hours with Merlin. Before it would only stay online for 3. p🙂
