Saw comments on this router last time it was on sale saying it had issues with drop outs. I ignored the comments assuming it was just bad units. Sure enough, the wifi drops at least a couple times a week. Some say it's better on Merlin firmware, but still not perfect. I haven't tried it for myself yet.

Agreed. I get drop outs myself. Kinda get frustrated.

Very new router and WiFi 6 driver is not stable! Also to note this does not support WiFi6E standard. Read here: https://www.asus.com/content/wifi6/#WIFI-6E/

If you want to save money stick to Asus AC routers like 86U for now until this standard evolves and settles down!

Got an Asus AX55, then "downgraded" to an AC one. Much more stable. 😡

Correct.
Or for OP's similarity-priced alternative, I'd go for the RT-AX3000. I have 3 of them in my house on a wired mesh backhaul on wifi6, and everything just works in my heavily smart-connected home.... (50+ plugs, switches, dimmers, light strips, outdoor bug zappers, Christmas lights, fountain, flood lights, etc...)

How long have you owned? using Stock firmware or merlin? Amazon has them "renewed" from the ASUS store for $119 (AX3000/58u) model. I've been holding off. They can be had new for $159.

Had one from last black Friday and although mesh worked with my old AC68U (TMO converted), wifi6 would NOT work well and I had it disabled.

Pre-Black Friday this year, Amazon warehouse had discounts, and I got open box 2 units for about $100 each.

All running on stock and wifi6 works amazingly well!!

I have the routers scheduled to do a weekly restart every Sunday morning at 3:30am so everything remains smooth with no dropped connections.

Yes, not the cheapest when you have 3 on a mesh, but I'm extremely happy with them overall!

Man, I really wanted this one but opted for a cheap, barebones TP-link AX1500. It had some drops about a month in for a week, and then it works flawlessly since. I think more features just causes things to break more, rather than be more reliable, and I just wanted something reliable.

Bunch of AX82U's available on Amazon warehouse deals for $163. Got one last night to replace my hardwired backhaul AC-68 pair. Debating getting a second ax82u, but won't know coverage until I get it installed. Was going to get the ax86u, but the ax82 was almost half the cost.

That's attractive. Used-Good and currently no Merlin support though.

Yeah. I figured low risk with Amazon returns. We will see how it goes... I have 70-ish devices, so maybe I will end up getting an ax86u at some point and make the ax82u a secondary node or just get a secondary ax82u.

There is a Merlin fork in the works for the ax82u. Was alpha a month ago with some bugs and then went into beta.
