I even use this on my netgear routers with xwrt-vortex. It simply does everything. Mesh, plugins, security monitoring, vpn server, etc. And it's graphically pleasing. Live graphs, dials, and a guided tour to get up and running. I like it alot.

The merlin firmware differs from others functionly in that it does hardware acceleration. A proprietary code that alternates syn/acks if your hardware isn't top tier.

What that effectly means is that your throughput hits peak for the port. Uplink of 2.5gb, you 2.3gb. Uplink of 1 gb, you get 900mb. Whereas dd-wrt and tomato would get 1.5 and 600, respectively, depending on the hardware type. Some very high end routers do everything in hardware, so it doesn't matter, but most are software manipulated to optomize speed(because software is free/hardware isn't).

For those who don't want to mess w/ 3rd party firmware (e.g., Merlin, Tomato, etc):
This router's last firmware update was 2022/11/28 (source: https://www.asus.com/us/networkin...e=RT-AX68U ) whereas a spot check of other ASUS routers show updates as recently as June 2023. Thus it doesn't look like ASUS is still supporting this RT-AX68U router.

Seems unlikely since they're still supporting the older version (RT-AC68U). F/W Version 3.0.0.4.386.51665. Dated 2023/05/11.

These units make for affordable and fast Merlin nodes off a AX86u.

Actually ASUS does support their routers but it usually takes them 1-1.5 years to put out an update. Because I have a similar router from 2020 and I was wondering why it wasn't getting any updates and right when I complained to ASUS suddenly got this mega update available

ASUS took 1 year and 8 months to publish a firmware update for the GS-AX3000. So, you can't assume that. I'd read somewhere that the firmware updates that they published for other routers during that time were buggy.

Asus-wrt merlin is probably the best firmware out there atm. Latest firmware for this model was released on 8-4-2023.

I have an old netgear wndr4300. Need a new router bc it barely works anymore. I tried updating the firmware but no luck. I don't have hardware that requires the lambo of routers. Infinity X1 box, surface pro 6, iPhone XR and a iPhone 13. Old iPad Air 3 and a 2 year old dell laptop. I doubt any of them can handle anywhere 1gbps. I did a speed test on my iPhone XR and got 37-41 mbps lol! My chief complaints are the distance the router broadcasts. Barely reaches the living room in 2k sq ft house. Also our iPhones will connect to WiFi but it doesn't work. You need to toggle WiFi to get them to really connect. Outside, you're better off just turning off WiFi. 5g is unuseable. It's incredibly slow for some reason. 2.4g channel is much faster ironically. Is this a good router for me?

It should much better in several ways. Better speed, better antennas - which should give better coverage, better firmware, etc...

update - just looked that the specs on your old router - wow, it's old and outdated and likely why your 5Ghz is not working as it only supports 802.11 a/n. This Asus has AX WiFi 6 - which at the very least will be supported by your iPhones. I could go on and on...but the answer to your question is undoubtedly, yes, the ASUS will be a big improvement.

How big of an upgrade is this over a AC68U?
