Without the ionizer, there's not really any way for the thing to produce ozone since it's just pushing air through a filter.

There are good 3rd party filters on Amazon now for these. I want to say 2 HEPA and 2 Charcoal packs are in the $30 - $40 range. We vacuum the pre-filter about ever 4-6 months (depending on the dog shedding) and change the HEPA filter when it says to - which is about once a year. Overall, very low maintenance and in Auto-mode, it is pretty unnoticeable.
Definitely worth $120.
