WD40EFAX .. SMR drive that should not be used in a NAS.

If you bought one of these between October 2018 and July 21, 2021, there is a settlement with WDC

Can I use this in normal Windows 10 desktop as a second drive?
Do I have to setup NAS?

If using unraid and not as parity drives, you should be okay. Using them in any RAID configuration is not recommended

This is okay for write once use such as archival usage (backup to USB for example), but it will error out in as few as 50 to 100 lifetime hours if you try to fill it beyong 50% in an OS setting such as any NAS.

Avoid SMR HD for storage if possible, they don't have a good reputation for reliability and performance.
Interesting to see WD label SMR HD as WD RED NAS disk.
Avoid at all costs and get a WD 8TB+ HD.

Are these good for RAID-1 like in a two-disk NAS device? Why is SMR bad?
