No app required. You can just connect the devices. Not sure about the Linux thing, but I'm sure they're better options for that
I think you are looking for a Raspberry Pi!

I agree but at least you can add a USB storage to this one
Are you sure? How can you add a USB storage? The product page doesn't mention anything about this.

If this is possible then I'm ordering because the previous 4k stick can't do this.

It's possible on both this one and the last one. All you need is an adapter that splits the micro usb connection, one for power and another for whatever it is you want to connect. Ethernet or storage are the most useful additions.

Not entirely true about the previous generations. While it is possible, it's not native and requires tinkering. This is native plug and play

How is this as a Plex client vs Chromecast with Google TV?
I have both and they both work really well with Plex. The Chromecast with Google TV (CCGTV) seems to work better with the Live TV function. The Fire TV Stick 4k (2019 version) seems to stop playing every so often. I have to switch channels to get video to play again. The CCGTV is connected to my Hisense 65H9F and as far as my eyes can tell the quality is awesome. The Fire TV Stick is connected to an old Samsung HDTV but everything looks as good as it can considering it's age. I was doing some searching and it looks like the CCGTV will be $10 less for Googles Black Friday Sale.

We all knew it was going to go on sale because that's how Amazon does it, but it's still funny to see it get knocked down from $55 to $35 this soon.

AV1 decode is helpful, the extra 0.5 GB RAM might help sideloaded Kodi, and the 40% faster claim seems close enough based on benchmarks. Most of that is in the GPU, I think.

8 GB (more like 5.5 GB usable) storage is the Achilles' heel. Depending on what applications you're putting on it, like a Kodi installation with cached data, it can be constrained. Weird that it didn't get bumped to 16 GB or 32 GB when even the Kindle e-reader has up to 32 GB. Yeah, I guess that splitter for adding more storage is an option.

If tinkering means going into the settings and formatting as device storage which anyone can do, then I'd agree with you. But then I'd say that nobody has access to YouTube or Google if they weren't able to figure that out.
