And Costco gives 4 year warranty with Citi, hard to beat that in $899.
On Surface convertibles, I just cant get into laptops that cant type on your lap at home. Unless its just for office work and trips.
I would have gone with a Surface Pro 4 with great keyboard for him if BestBuy sale had a Ryzen 5 16GB on sale. My Ryzen 5700u laptop consumes 8GB easy with Chrome tabs, and really think 12-16GB for shared system memory use for the iGPU makes more sense.

Not to mention, I got 1.5 hours longer battery life on this 7i Pro streaming 4k content to both units doing a test yesterday.. Sp8 has no where near the "16 hours" of battery they claim.. I'll be making a few more tests to confirm.
5400~ score in CB23 on the SP8 vs 6900~ on the 7i Pro. That's a 27% increase in performance over the SP8 for $1000 less in cost.
Fans are quiet when they do kick on for the 7i Pro but if you're in High Performance mode they can get louder, but are still a pleasant wooshy sound, nothing high pitched here thankfully.
During medium loads, i'd say the SP8 and the 7i Slim have a similar fan noise profile but I will give the nod to the SP8 for holding out a long as it can before it even turns the fans on. The Lenovo is eager and happy to run the fans over more average tasks but it's rarely noticeable at least.
The display is among the best out there and will probably be hard to beat at this price point. But from reviews, that high resolution can cause the battery life to tank to 8 hours. Not a big deal for me as I'm almost always near an outlet and in the few times I'm not, I generally need no more than 4 hours to get some work done.
The one thing you're losing vs getting a Thinkpad is that classic Thinkpad keyboard. This laptop's keyboard is pretty alright if not above average. But it's not going to have the key travel of say a T14 or a Carbon.
EDIT: Don't forget the 2-year warranty is standard. Buy it using the Costco Visa card and it gets a whopping total of 4 years of warranty support.
