As a previous synology owner I can confirm there are also a lot of problems and security issues. In fact, all these internet-connected devices could be a victim of ransomeware/malware. IMO, instead of saying who has problems, it's more useful to share some tips regarding data backup and protection.
I bought this a year ago, probably the worst purchase of my life. Two full data losses that were QNAPs fault (one ransomware, one bad drive management). Working with support is like pulling teeth. I bought this to be "easy" but I've spent hours upon hours fighting the bad interface, absolutely nonexistent error messages, etc.

Looking to basically bite the $450 I paid for it and migrate to Synology this week.

Stay away.
PC consumes more power than these devices
PC you have to maintain software..its a constant battle
There are several developers working for us in these systems to update the software and security make these systems better everyday

Dumb question...why are you guys buying a proprietary NAS server instead of just putting 4 drives in a PC?

Well form factor is one of the reasons.

I have the 453Be and I would not recommend QNAP. Let's ignore the security for a bit. Biggest problem is that sleep is broken on QNAP. The hardware just doesn't stop spinning the hard drives. The machine keeps buzzing loudly and the hard drives keep spinning 24/7.

I experimented with this a bit. Some background first - I was hit by Qlocker which left a lot of junk txt files on my NAS. After I cleaned everything up, I figured I'll start from scratch since the machine is always buzzing. So I moved files I need to an external drive. Then formatted the whole NAS, did a full factory reset and then started from scratch. Point is - it was a clean system. I did all the firmware updates and moved files back. Only real apps I have running is Plex and a docker app 'Calibre-web'.

I knew docker is a problem for sleep and so I turned that off, and also Plex. The system still won't sleep. I started turning all system apps off one by one. Finally had to turn off SMB sharing for it to sleep. On another try, it slept even with SMB sharing ON, but only when I get below a few system apps running. I had turned off help center, qfirewall, malware check etc. Further test shows that its just random and no particular app seems to causing lack of sleep. You change a few apps around but as soon as you have more than a bare minimum running it refuses to go to sleep. Eventually I gave up trying to figure it out.

Reading through their forums the consensus is that QNAP sleep is broken and has been for quite some time. Pages after pages of people complaining about it. I tried their sleep test and pulled logs etc. End of that day, it's clear that it's no mystery app causing issues. It's simply the OS itself. A lot of people on forums say that if you want your NAS to sleep, just move to Synology. And I wholeheartedly agree.

Been dying for a NAS but decided I'm not gonna do it. Got an older power edge r720 server from work that I'm going to run ZFS on. Way more power and the ability to install any cards I want in it. Yes it chews up way more power so that's a huge con but I do also run other virtual machines on it.

Right now i run ZFS on an esxi server which I built on regular desktop parts about 8 years ago. Still works great but I want hot swappable and more CPU power.

If anyone else is out there willing to spend a bit more and is tech savvy, look into it. You can get cheap/old servers online and build out a monster.

My electric bill is the one thing that frowns upon this but I need a hypervisor anyway and don't trust these NAS devices to run them as well as a real server.

Great deal here nonetheless… especially if you want to set it and forget it with ease.

it's not the "security issue" but someone is trying to get in.

Why on earth is your admin interface exposed to the Internet?

Same here, I read people downgraded back to 8gb RAM and Plex stopped crashing. But honestly I don't want to downgrade so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place haha

I have no issues with Plex and my 16gb Ram

So if your PC was attacked you wouldn't buy another PC lets say HP or Dell. That isn't their fault per se. Open some services on your PC and see what happens.

How would this compare to using an old i5 3570K and PC case? I know the form factor is going to be a big difference but I mean in RAID and streaming performance? I'm willing to install custom software like linux distros if needed.

Also there's a much cheaper QNAP TR-004 on sale for $180, I assume it just has worse processing power for streaming but I don't know?

Thanks in advance.

Someone said this runs circles around anything else for the price. How does it compare to the Synology 920+ which is the same price now.

I have a qnap 451+ and am not too keen on sticking with qnap.

I had QNAP and I didn't like the interface, I switched over to SYNOLOGY about 10 years ago pretty happy so far no issues.
