Since Ms. Killjoy brought it up I'll give my opinion from personal experience.

Main difference is DV and the extra adjustments with "tone mapping modes" are more for people that like to tweak their PQ, example are PJ owners.
Since PJ's can't do DV the 820 is way overkill.

The 420 processes HDR better than any player in this price range(it's the same as the 820).
Since DV is dynamic HDR you get whatever the transfer of the movie gives you.
Depending on that transfer, the HDR processing on the 420 can rival a movie with DV.

The bigger difference is upscaling to 4K, the 420 does that even better.
It does it so well that depending on the transfer of the movie, BD disc may rival 4k streaming.

This player will give you the best PQ from all three disc formats and no issues that people often bring up with other players.

If you have a home theater speaker set up, physical media is worth it over streaming. If you're using the speakers built into your TV or a soundbar, you won't notice much difference with blu ray vs streaming. The immense difference is in the audio quality.

What secret sauce Panasonic cooked up to make upscaling and hdr tone mapping so good? They got MIT brains or what? How come sony 4k players dont do these magics?
They do. And for what its worth the lg oled do better upscaling anyway

It's hard to believe they're still manufacturing uhd players that don't support Dolby Vision
Because not every movie is made in dolby vision. In fact a vast majority arent. Like 20 movies are coming out next year made in dolby vision. Hardly justifies having home support when thousands are made without it. https://professional.dolby.com/ci...ases/#gref

It has to do with the HDR processing that has to happen for you to view the metadata content.
Same holds true for upscaling.
There is no set standard that's what separates players.

I pulled the trigger, but then cancelled after I saw that it's this price point multiple times here over the past year. I don't have any burning need it get it right now, so I'll wait.

I have an older Pansonic blu-ray disc player DMP-BD80, a mid-level player at the time. I also have a Sony A8H OLED. I went to buy the ub420 and the salesperson talked me out of it. He said the upscaling on my TV is better than my current player and better than the upscaling in ub420. Therefore, he said I would not notice a difference in PQ with the ub420 from what I have now. Can anyone confirm this?

In for one. I have an older 1080p projector. I'm looking forward to having better sound with this Panasonic.

Also Inglourious Basterds 4k transfer was no improvement over the blu-ray version abeit it doesn't have dolby vision. Since I already have some of these movies on blu-ray & the x-mas sd's for the 4K version are popping up , I really hate to double-dip on poor transfers HDR or not.
I am curious...what specific panel are you watching these remastered discs on?

I dont think I have ever seen a remaster that wasnt at the very least brighter than the blu ray version of the same film

As for remasters...Apocalypse Now-Final Cut is phenomenal in both picture and sound
Normally I dont buy the remasters. But I had heard this one was good and it was $9.99 BF two years ago

Phenomenal picture and sound

That's just silly, I get those misleading comments in here(SD) but they should know better but not surprised TBH!

Think about this logically, the chain goes content>device(in this case player)>display.

How do you view disc content on a display without the player to test this out ? 🤔

The closest would be to play a BD disc on a Blu Ray player onto a display then play that same disc on a 4K player to the same display.

So no that 420 player will upscale the content the best over any player in its prices range.
Your display will then process what it's fed better than other displays.

I would tend to believe him
In my opinion...Sony televisions have the best picture processing on the market

But since you have a 4K TV..it would make sense to buy a native 4K player...do you have one?

If you are expecting some eye opening difference in the two...be prepared to be disappointed

I have owned the Sony X800 and Panasonic UB820

What your saying probably makes sense for a blu ray that is actually 4k, but what about older blu ray movies that are not 4k? I believe that's what the salesman was referring to.

Absolutely if I owned Blu-ray movies that were 4k. I tend to stream 4k movies and other general 4k content from Netflix, Prime, etc., rather than use a Blu-ray player. So if I'm playing older Blu-rays that are not 4k, not sure if the 420 player makes sense, though it is a cheap switch out.

That has been one of my biggest qualms with Blu Ray since it came out. Great picture and sound, sure, but you can't even stop and start where you left off. At least, none of the players I've ever had will do that.
Consoles can do that.
