Was looking for mason jars to store food. and came across these Ball jars at Walmart.com. Prices are lower and quality is better than those at Amazon.com, where many unknown jar brands rule. Minimum $35 for free shipping,

For anyone that hasn't bought these, the widemouth are about a billion times nicer to deal with. Does anyone have a use case where the narrow ones are actually better?
Although these go in and out of stock, these seem like normal prices when they are available through Walmart.com. Target usually has prices that are close to these too (again, when in stock).
When you have tiny person hands? Literally no other reason to do it. Harder to clean, harder to scope out whatever is inside, etc.

A little tip for people who have never used glass jars. NEVER take a jar that is boiling hot and plunge it into very cold water to cool it down. It will shatter the glass. Instead use warm water to cool it down so the glass doesn't expand/shrink too fast and shatter.

Food in Jars is a good resource for beginners. You can find her books at the library. If video is preferable, The Homesteading Family is really good. She covers everything and is easy to understand.

Target.com has the regular lids for $3.79. So this is MUCH cheaper.

Any idea where we can get the single piece lids for these jars? Not for pickling but want these to store spices and dealing with 2 piece lids are a hassle

I have only used the 2 piece lids. I have no experience with these. So I don't know if these are what you are looking for and/or if the prices are good, bad or indifferent.

Not due to this deal...but I just bought a 12 pack from my local Target for about $10 a few hours ago.

They had a half dozen or so on the shelves. Was not aware this stuff may be a hot commodity.

So I'd say check your nearby Target.

These jars have a weird design for the lids. A loose cap that falls off the closing lid. Lid doesn't come off as single unit but is made up of two loose parts.

if someone understands the reasoning for this design, let us know. I cant think of the benefits with this weird design

Canning things like stewed tomatoes, juices, or other things that you just open and pour out. Lids are usually cheaper too.
I already have enough of the regular mouth and some smaller jars so just stick with it for consistency.

Yes, this is regular price. Sad state when something common and basic for the last 150 years like canning jars is in stock and considered a slickdeal. Last year was my first time ever I saw price gouging and supply issues that I can remember. Walmart, Tractor Supply, and Target still had them at their normal pricing but stock was hit or miss.

Reusable lids for non-canning purposes: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainst...e/21312094
Alternative.. Lids from various jars of mayo fit the regular mouth canning jars to. Look around for other potential things in your frig. Grated Parmesan cheese lid, country store jellies and jam lids etc. chances are you already have some perfectly good lids when those products are used up.

A case can be made for regular mouth. First being price(cheaper), availability(everyone wants wide mouth so I can often times find regular lids when large are unavailable). I use both but I tend to use regular for soups and sauces, or things that are small/chopped/liquid. There are some that have said that regular, having less area (smaller diameter) to seal, leads to a higher rate of sealed jars and less leaks.

Yeah I don't trust myself with the reusable ones yet. I have actually used the walmart brand lids and they held up pretty well, 0 failures.
Funny thing is I don't have kids and I live in a Suburb north of Boston with a medium sized yard. So I don't even have the kids to help, and hubby wants no part of the garden. But theres nothing like eating your own homemade salsa or jarred peaches in the middle of the winter. So I keep at it. Plan on expanding the garden this year and maybe someday a greenhouse to extend the growing season. laugh out loud
I experimented last year with reusing old lids( I know ball says Not to). I inspected each one and discarded any with rust or damage. I did boil them first, but I've had pretty good success, most all that I did sealed fine.
