What versions are there? I see one labeled gen 1. Is there a gen 2?
I thought these came with a USB-C cabe. It doesn't specify.
It specifies System Requirements and lists game consoles and Win but not Linux.
Isn't it a storage drive that can be used as any other storage drive for anything?
Does it come with software or security?
The last time this came around, it had the same HDD in it the My Passport has in it.
I use these for everything. But the big advantage is they are not as sensitive to movement as a regular HD. Maybe!
Normally you just hook them up and let the XBOX tell you what to do.
Windows 11 exfat or NFTS for your computer.

It says:

:
USB 3.2 Gen 1, Micro B
which honestly I'd rather have almost anything else. Like Mini B. Or obviously C. I think these are all formatted exfat and work in anything. Bunch of marketing.
This is gen 3.2 so it works with? I still haven't snagged a PS5 yet but as an additional external hard drive it's not fast enough still? I know it would most likely still work on my PS4 but in the switch when I do finally land a PS5 these wouldn't work or they would? Everyone tries on the PS5 to do internal nvme that's gen 4 that's why I wonder. This might be different being external or?

Correct. Sony has stated you need a PCI.e Gen 4 M.2 SSD if you want to run games off it. You can put games into 'cold storage' on an external like this.

I have a number of old My Book powered external drives of varying sizes that I use for part of my Plex storage. Short of building a NAS, would this kind of drive be good as a live replacement for those 6+ year old drives?
My intent is to transfer the contents of the older drives before they hit a point where failure is likely and then keep them on hand simply as backups.
I absolutely LOVE these. Just grabbed another, which would be my 3rd 5TB drive. Also have 2x 4TB version as well. These just feel super sturdy. They're problem free (so far) and just nice to look at. I'm using the 2x 5TB for external data for my laptop and data backup from various sources. The backup drive is always kept in a fireproof safe. The 2x 4TB one is being used for my PS5 and 1 for my Xbox Series X. This one just ordered will be replacing an old 2TB external drive currently being used on my Xbox Series S. Thanks for the heads-up, OP!

So how does this work on the Xbox and ps5 especially? Can you run games off it on the series X? Ps5 you need to load them onto the main HDD? It's all kinda new to me thx
