There are 2 slots which are quite easy to access. The bottom is easier to take off than other consumer laptops I have upgraded before. There is also a 2.5" SATA bay and cable that can run a second drive in addition to the NVME drive.
This is an excellent deal, for anyone with modest multitasking / storage requirements or who is willing to open the case (or have someone else do it) for a cheap upgrade:

-Full HD Screen, often missing in $300 laptops
-Most recent (11th gen) i3, which performs similar to 10th gen i5 in most tasks
-SDD and ram are low, but not hard to upgrade if need be

You pay dearly for more RAM and/or SDD space. This is the sweet spot at the moment
Tempted to order using my Amex Business Platinum $200 Dell credit.

$309.99 - $200 Amex = $109.99

Does this have windows? Even 8gb ram is pretty much obsolete with windows and half that nvme will be windows installation.

I get it, it's a cheap laptop, but if you want a functional windows laptop this isn't going to be a good buy

Edit: i see it has windows 11 s mode. Unfamiliar with that
Explanation: https://www.howtogeek.com/354057/...in-s-mode/

Verdict: That's a no for me, dawg.

Would be great if it had 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.

Me too, but we don't have an option for 256 / 8gb in this configuration at any price, much less $30-40.

For $80 more you get quad core, double the memory, and double the hard drive.

I bought one of these when it was posted for ~$293 before Christmas. The machine works fine for general web browsing and watching movies which was my intended use.

My only gripe is this will not output higher than 1080p if you connect it to an external monitor. The built-in 1080p display is fine for me, but it would be nice to go higher when connecting to a TV. If you poke around online, you'll find a bunch of angry complaints about the lack of higher resolution when connecting to external displays. Seems to be an issue with the lower-end Dell laptops.

Also, Windows 11 is crap. Wish I bought one of these when it still came with Windows 10 S.

For a pleasant experience, you really need at least 8 gbs of RAM. Also, that 128 gb hard drive will fill up pretty quick. I'm not sure if this is still a good deal once you make these upgrades.
Its really easy to upgrade the RAM on these. I have zero technical experience and it took me less than 10 minutes. Remove 6-7 screws on the bottom, loosen two more, then pull off the panel. Everything is right there.
Quote from sdnoobster :
How easy is this to open and add ram? Anyone have a link to compatible ram? I assume take out the 4gb and add a single 8gb stick?
See above. There are two slots. I added this to the empty slot: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HJB2KSR

Is this a good option for someone that would primarily use it for web surfing?
Yes

Definitely agree. I bought a 3000 model just over 3 years ago. It came standard with the i-3, 8 gigs ram, 256 SSD, etc. etc. And got it on sale from Best Buy for $349.

As is, if you only surf the web, do some paperwork, etc. it is a decent little machine for those types of small tasks. But you try anything that needs even a slightly larger task, you would not to wait on this little guy. Smilie

My biggest complaint was they do not even give an option for a backlit keyboard, because it has no connection on the motherboard (I opened and checked.)

From what I've read, permanently moving to full Windows mode makes these machines run like garbage, even with more RAM.
A whole lot of difference between an i3 from three years ago to an 11th gen i3.

Any DDR4 3200mhz will work. Your first link for example is ok.

With that said I would spend just a little more for a system that already has the 8gb, better CPU, and hard drive.

Or 6 core and even better GPU for $400

I've had bad luck with HP and don't know if I'd risk getting another. I don't have a Costco membership anyway.

All laptops in the $500 > range are going to be less robust than higher end ones.

My little one is running his older HP laptop with no issues. I did update the memory to 16gb this Christmas.

Also when buying higher priced items like this use a CC that extends the warranty by a year.

1/3 of the reviews are 1 star saying it's laggy. Can anyone tell me why this is a good deal?
