Zen4 will be same way later this year changing to LGA and DDR5 memory motherboards will be $200+ just like Z690

Most reviewers recommend DDR4 at this point since the gains are minor over the price you pay. I got the Gigabyte Z690 UD AX DDR4 motherboard and this RAM:

Should be good for a while

My experience could not be further from this. It's completely lacking core features of W10, like basic taskbar functionality that is an absolute nightmare to use -- can't unstack windows, forced to use thumbnails instead of window names, completely wasting 80% of the real estate of the task bar which you can't customize or change at all now. No second tool tray or clock on secondary monitors. Games that ran perfectly fine right up to the upgrade constantly hang, crash, black screen, etc. It wrecks VR stability and performance, and I constantly have to restart Steam VR and my computer to get games to even launch. My task bar icons on my secondary monitor scramble themselves into a spaced out mess randomly half a dozen times per day, where they get overlapped on top of each other and scattered into the empty space in the task bar, but the actual clickable area for the window sits in the original now-invisible spaces, and the only way to fix it is to restart the explorer process each time. I have yet to find one single good thing to say about this half baked pile of spaghetti code, and it won't be touched by a single business until they can achieve the basic stability and functionality of W10. It's insane that they removed so much basic content that is imperative to productivity.

Dont know if you have a microcenter near you, but that mb cpu price range is close to what I paid for a 12600k and msi660 mb(sale price and standard $20 combo discount), benchmark wise the 12600k does substantially better than the 5600x. Something to consider, also personally I have returned and bought better pc equipment under very similar circumstances so if it will nag at you then I wouldn't lose any sleep over utilizing the return period, else if your happy with your setup then just enjoy and don't stress over a few clock cycles
do they already have the budget alder lake motherboards at microcenter?

Best price I've seen so far for this processor. Had I not owned a X570 rig slotted w/ a 5800X, I probably would've consider purchasing this for a new build.

Now I'm also regretting purchasing the 12600k for $230 when they had the 12700k for $300 that day at Microcenter 🤨

When I build Intel PCs, my rule of thumb has always been to only use i7's and above, and on the flip side, that happens to be a comparable variant being offered by AMD (an X700X or X800X). I know myself, so anything less than would result w/ me feeling buyer's remorse 👍🏽

People bitching about 150w CPU's are the same people running 400w worth of bulbs in their office, or 20 year old AC units, or HVAC systems from the 1970's… who honestly gives a shit… Do you not own a home with centralized AC or thermostats that control temperature…? Have you made your entire house efficient/eco friendly…? Cause if not you needn't worry about a cpu that uses 75w more power than another and you have bigger fish to fry like replacing that 1800w space heater or hair dryer…
Totally agreed. It's laughable to tout the benefits of some tens of watts lower power consumption on a CPU, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the average persons environmental footprint. Unless you drive an electric car, your house is covered in solar panels and has modern insulation and ultra-eco thermostat settings, your CPU use isn't even visible on the bar graph of your energy consumption. Many watts of energy go into the manufacturing and transportation of everything you buy and eat, out of consumers sight and mind.

Not sure why CPUs are singled out so readily for being power hogs. They're often sitting next to 300w GPUs and indications are that will be increasing to 400w GPUs soon.

I own a 5600X… it's a fantastic sweet spot chip. But when I see it's low energy consumption clinching arguments, I think of the townsfolk in the South Park episode where they're all driving Prius's and snorting their own smug farts.

This is a great deal. I bought 12700KF (without integrated graphics) from Newegg with the price of $380 on New Year's day with MSI Z690 WIFI DDR4 motherboard plus Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 AIO. I have to admit that this is a very powerful CPU. The idle temp is 25C with the room temp of 21 C. When I ran Prime95, the max CPU core temp reached 90 C. I wonder if this is normal for this chip.

Totally agreed with totally agreeing.

No offense to anyone in particular, but a lot of "these" folks appear unsufferable.
People well off, with high enough budget for top of the line/performance CPUs and GPUs/etc will sit there and pretend that extra few watts will make or break their entire lives...

Anyway,
On topic:
I have and run both, AMD 5600x, and the new i7 12700kf in a couple of my home PCs.
Without writing a novel here, I can tell you this: at idle both do the same thing, at "normal" loads and gaming the AMD 5600x is only 65W, and tops out 50-52 degrees Celsius (NH-D15 cooler here), with slight undervolt.
The i7 goes to 80-90W on average under "normal" load and gaming here, and runs at 50-58 degrees Celsius (same cooler as above). Yes, the i7 will go full power ("never go full retard!") at all core load, maxed out.......but, how many of you run your rig @ full multicore load 24/7?
Don't answer....b/c if you do, you should also know that you chose the wrong CPU/PC architecture for the job.

Ppl with 'enough' $$$ in their pockets....buy the best/desired components, tweak your systems a bit to run the best power/performance ratios you can, enjoy your systems and you life in general.

Wanna save the planet? Go plant a tree instead.

Side note:
Gaming differences b/w them?
New/multicore/aaa games.....i7 on average seems to yield 10-20% more FPS.
CS:GO.....i7 gets me 200+ more FPS (400-650 FPS on 5600x - vs - 550-900FPS on i7 ....on 'dust2' at 1440p).

I disagree, RAM has almost never been the bottleneck for me, even in my old rig with 16GB of 1866mhz RAM games ran fine, it was cyberpunk that eventually pushed my 4790K to the limit and caused frame rate issues and not the ram or my 3060 Ti GPU. I am not convinced anyone with a respectable cpu like this i7 and a good GPU will be forced to upgrade to a new mobo because their 3600mhz DDR4 RAM is the bottleneck 12-24 months down the line… but who knows!
-edit: why the thumbs down…? You guys experience poor performance due to an evident RAM bottleneck on the regular? I don't believe it haha!
What I was trying to say is that even though 12700k has great value right now, that savings is let down by the need to upgrade again to fully unlock its potential for those that opted for a ddr4 mobo. You'll end up spending more at the end. But anyone that need a PC now, by all means upgrade.

I didn't thumb down though. I'm on classic interface so I can only give reps.

Np.
Read/watch all the reviews-they're accurate.

My CPU-Z single core scores:
AMD 5600x= 635
Intel i7 1200kf= 832

My Intel is undervolted by .75V and boosted to 5.1Mhz P-cores and 4.0Mhz E-cores.
My AMD....I think it's PBO'd by 200, and undervolted as well - I just don't even remember anymore what I did to it (it's my daughter's PC now).

Don't forget Intel rocks at this time. Control your mind. Remind it every 1 min "I'm gonna buy Intel Gen 12. I don't need this shitty 5600X anymore".
