Why even make it optional? My 11 yr old has had one (savings acct) for 7 years now... he knows that for Christmas and birthday money he spends half and saves half. He's got over 2k at this point and knows he can't touch it till he starts driving... even then it'll be emergency need only. Though we did give him alot of the money we got for him from stimulus money. His 4 year old sister is doing the same thing. Need to move them into money markets or something but I'm not overly worried about it.

Elite I just moved my kids money into certificates. Rates are pretty good right now through my credit union. Just a thought

dont like the fidelity asset options, they either stock index and/or bond, have you seen the rising yield lately , it is killing the all the smaller

banks because bond value are tanking. The higher the yield it will eventually tank the stock too. Bond performance were down all last year for the first time in 40 yrs because inflation . these 529 plan also does not allow you to put into a money market and wait for high and low of the market.

So from tax perspective, this youth account is the same as custodial account, isn't it? I.e., "Unearned income from $0 to $1,100 is tax-free if the child has earned no income. Unearned income above $2,200 is taxed at the parent's marginal tax rate if the child has no earned income."

The only difference is on who controls the account.

If you did the Bloom deal would you still qualify for this one? Also is it per kid or just one kid?

I Bonds can aid in that. It would lock the money for 12 months in any increment $25+. The rates are insane right now too. Alternatively, could purchase EE bonds, but at the moment the inflation adjusted interest rates for I Bonds are crazy high.
1. I Bonds aren't exactly an 'entry-level' tool to teach your kids about managing money.

2. In either case, the October adjustment is going to bring them down below shorter term treasuries (it's looking to be @ 4.3% in Oct), and you'll have to keep your I Bond for a year. I bought in Sept. last year and got a good rate for that year I've had them, but I'm liquidating in Jan. because of the drop.

This really is good for teaching your kids about saving and deferred gratification at any age, and then move into actual investing concepts.

Established companies and what seems like a good third of all apps in the pipeline are literally targeting kids' allowances to get money in the door. Parents clap like seals.

I guess in a society where media and parents ram the worship of money above all else down the kids' throats from the maternity ward forward without regard to the consequence of fully fleshing out an inescapable digital identity before they even reach puberty that can be tracked, traced, targeted and manipulated forever, there's nothing to see here.

Bloom is for adult 18+, youth account is for under 18. The same person can potential apply for the youth account and then bloom after turned 18 but not the other way around

Crap website. While entering the date of birth of my teen of 16 years, it still throws validation error complaining that the age should be between 13 and 17
