Just a typical apple fan-boy trying to shove a MacBook down that member's throat even when it's pretty obvious he's probably asking for a gaming, or a really powerful, laptop since he asked to compare between two gaming laptops. Nowhere did he even mention anything about battery life. Even if he were to, there are numerous options in the windows OS for great battery runtime like the LG gram lineup, Microsoft surface lineup, etc before jumping on to the MacBooks.

I have the same AMD Advantage laptop and also a 3080 laptop and the AMD actually out performs the 3080 AFTER CHANGING FROM X16 MEMORY MODULES TO X8 MODULES. I put that in caps cause it's super important and totally unlocks the performance of this and many other laptops. Here are two YouTube videos that benchmark this fact. Aside from Ray tracing, the RX6800m sits comfortably on the same tier as the 3080 and totally smokes the 3070 TI. It's really dumb these laptops ship with these slow crappy modules.
IMO the only downside of this model is lack of a mux switch, but if you connect a monitor to the usb-c port it connects directly to the GPU bypassing the i-gpu and that makes this laptop really shine. Hope this helps

Side note: I got mine as an open box from best buy for $850 out the door because they screwed my order up and discounted it.

The difference between the two is battery life. AMD will give you more. The Intel still sucks a lot of juice.

If you're not gaming and battery life is really your concern, then get a MacBook Pro 16" M1 Pro. I know this will be unpopular with the PC only crowd, but this thing is a beast when it comes to battery life.

If you are gaming, then battery life should not be your concern, because both of these will eat the battery quickly in a gaming session. Also, the power of the two will be severely throttled on battery and that's going to make the comparison pointless. So just assume you're going to keep it plugged in for gaming sessions and the power consumption difference between the 2 CPUs is 20 watts (so not dramatic).
The only trouble is that from the gaming videos I've seen on YouTube, none of the MacBooks are any good, the fact that you have to turn down settings on rocket league is a sign that the game performance sucks

The original question comes from someone who don't care about the price difference between this and scar15 2022… but still, the ray trace is not every game

If those titles are ones you play and it is worth the $700 premium than that is a valid use case. Given that you will be frame rate limited in many of those titles with those features turned on, I prefer frame rates to visuals.

Yeah that's not true at all. Emulated games are an issue to some degree, native games are decent. But nobody buys them for gaming, so it really isn't something they optimize for.

Unfortunately nobody pointed out that I got the specs slightly wrong. The Asus page has different specs for the exact same model which is confusing.
Apparently, this is indeed the one with the WQHD 165Hz panel (not the FHD 300Hz) and 5980HX processor. I've edited that in my specs and title.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

On the linux side of things, this setup is kernel/mesa native. Don't need to deal with installing drivers.

The 3070ti does not have much if any advantage over the 6800m. The CPU is better but will not have any affect on gaming as neither one of these CPUs is a bottleneck for their GPUs. The mux switch is an issue but if you game on an external monitor then not so much.
If gaming on this laptops display, the CPU WILL often be the bottleneck. The CPU is usually the bottleneck when gaming at 1080p, as the GPU is barely stretching it's legs at that resolution. Gaming on an external monitor at higher resolutions, the GPU will be the bottleneck and the difference in CPU performance will make little difference. Well, the RAM is the bottleneck in OP, but that can be cheaply and really fixed.

Windows has always been the default gaming OS, with a minority on Linux. Very few games even run on Mac, with even fewer running on M1. Only a handful of games can run natively on M1 (most of them mobile games), with the few others that run having to run in an emulation mode with poor performance. The M1 Mac is a beast with battery life and performance on some software, but an iPhone is a better gaming computer.

Which one is better out of these 2? If price is not a constraint? ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 (2022) Gaming Laptop, 15.6" 300Hz IPS FHD Display, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti,Intel Core i9 12900H, 16GB DDR5, 1TB SSD, Per-Key RGB Keyboard, Windows 11 Home, G533ZW-AS94 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09RMW1...UTF8&psc=1
3070Ti is a little better performance, but in terms of battery life AMD is unmatched. I keep mine capprd at 80%battery and it gives me 6+hrs of normal use.

How does this compare to the new G14? Need to get a laptop for the kid starting college. Graduation gift is likely the G14. Kid is into gaming and will major in programming/graphic design, so figure something like this may be best.

Two completely different beasts. It depends on what your kid's daily routine will be like and if they'll have a monitor to use as well. The G14 will be more portable to carry around all day because it's smaller, lighter, and has better battery life. This Strix will be bigger and heavier, but obviously has a bigger display. It's honestly best to see them both in person if you can. That Strix is a big boy. Personally, I absolutely love the look and new upgrades the 2022 G14 has, especially that new display, but damn that price... The 2021 G14 with the QHD display goes on sale pretty frequently at Best Buy for $1250, but if funds aren't an issue, then those upgrades to the 2022 model are worth it, again, especially that display.

You may want to consider the Lenovo Legion 7 Slim while it's on sale for $1100 as well.

Okay so what your saying is, play the games that were designed for mac? That's stupid. Not everyone plays those games. Lots of people have steam. Lots of people play games like rocket league on a potato pc and have no problem running max settings over 200fps. A MacBook Air, albeit very impressive at video editing and production tasks, sucks at games like rocket league.

Not sure about the 2022 G14, but the 2021 G14 was not supposed to be used extensively closed, which was my intention so I returned it and got this one

Sorry but neither of these mobile GPUs with lower wattages are going to bottleneck either of these CPUs at 1080p or higher.
