The trimmer is in the ad. There is a picture of all the tools that are supposed to be free right on the 2 batteries page.

I bought 2 sets of batteries and regular chat gave me the trimmer/edger and the small pruner/recip saw for free.

I wanted to say that even though the hedge trimmer was "removed" there is actually a bundle I found through the Ryobi promotional page for Ryobi days. I clicked it and it said it was out of stock at my local Home Depot but they would ship it in a few days. The local store did have the "entry" battery set required for the deal and the correct trimmer (tool only) in stock, so I went in person. The deal was honored automatically at checkout, no haggling involved. Also, the hedge trimmer was clearly shown on the in store display so that wouldn't have been a hard battle. TL;DR - if there's something you want listed in the deal or picture don't hesitate to piece meal it and try it.

If it's in the picture, hunt down the exact tool only item and try it out - may have to go in store. I couldn't get the hedge trimmer but it's clearly on the store display and ad so I went in person, grabbed both items, and it worked without any issues.

Got this in store. The receipt says the power inverter has a max refund value of $47. Does that mean I can return that and keep the 2 batteries for $52?

Ready for the real "slick" in this deal? Add the batteries and tool, go to check out, select pick-up in store for the batteries (if your store has in stock) and ship to store on your tool. The price splits between the 2 to $49.99 each. Cancel the ship to store order within 45min and now it's slick! Worked for me, got the batteries, which is all I wanted for $50!!!

This doesn't work. I get an error trying to check out with this message: "Please make sure promotional items have the same delivery or pickup options and try again"

How did you get it to work? I had the batteries as Store Pickup and the discounted free tool as Ship To Home???

I did this today as well. It seems pretty clear to me that we can return the inverter and keep the batteries.

He's saying to do Store Pickup on batteries if your store has them in stock and Ship to Store on the Tool. Cancel the second. I'm about to try it as I only need batteries.

HD Might have fixed the issue because I did exactly what you are doing and it worked for me last week. Apologies for the inconvenience! Should have posted this that day :-(
