I've tried using these stakes and variations of them without any success. They just litter the yard eventually and ant populations are unaffected.

What worked for me is Taurus SC [diypestcontrol.com]. It's expensive but one bottle should last you for years as it's highly concentrated. (Add about 1 ounce to a gallon sprayer; the bottle auto measures)

Spray around the perimeter of the house and where ants like to congregate outdoors. In about 2 weeks the ants will be gone.

Taurus SC is the best product I've tried to keep insects out of my home. It brings a tear to my cheap basterd eye thinking how much money I spent trying inferior products over the years; I guess lessons don't come cheap laugh out loud
Please be very careful with this stuff. Fipronil is especially deadly to all social insects, including beneficial ones like bees. The "transfer effect" can be devastating for honey bees.
Even if that works, it will only kill some of the worker ants. The colony will raise more ants to replace them, and the gum will have no long-term effect. To control ants, you need to kill the queen. Which involves workers taking the bait back to the colony, where it's used to feed others including the queen.

Active ingredient in Taurus SC is Fipronil

Active ingredient in AMDRO is Hydramethylnon.

Active ingredient in Terro is Borax, which is the mildest of the three.

I think that's too much borax. I tried that ratio before and the ants just avoided it. As in I put a few drops of it directly in the path of an ant trail which went over porcelain tiles (so it wouldn't absorb the water). A few of them investigated it, but when I checked an hour later the ant trail just wait around the bait.

Yes Terro is a borax mix. But I spent a couple years mixing my own batches of borax and sugar water, and coming up with all sorts of contraptions to place it around the yard in ways where it wouldn't spill, leaves couldn't get into it, and the dog wouldn't lap it all up.

That's when I realized out that Terro isn't just a borax mix. It's also a dispenser which holds the borax mix inside. A custom-made dispenser which is far more convenient and elegant than the jerry-rigged dispensers I was trying to make. I now consider the price of these Terro boxes to be the price of the dispenser, and refill them with my own borax solution when they run dry.

If you mix DE with any sort of liquid, it will no longer work. It works because it gets into their joints and acts as an abrasive. If it gets wet it isn't sharp anymore.
You're also NOT supposed to use the DE that's made for pool filters, from what I've read.

These are useless. Nothing died around the bait. Ants even blocked the opening with dirt.

This works great on sugar ants. This won't work on other ants like carpenter. I like to get the squeeze bottle of this and fill up a soda cap with a tiny bit. The ants attack in no time and within a day or 2 they are all gone.

There must be certain ants that aren't bothered by borax. For me, this stuff works perfectly for the little sugar ants I find in my house in spring. Every single time. I always have this stuff stocked. I had a large dog and kibble gets dropped everywhere. I have no ants because of this stuff. I recently got a hot tub and those ants have been crawling all over it. Hopefully these stakes work. In for two

Exactly. You have to figure out what kind of ants you have, and what is effective for them.

I had carpenter ants and put these up outside, and the carpenter ants disappeared. (Another person said these didn't work for them with carpenter ants, so YMMV.) I also had some small ants outside (not sure what kind but not carpenter) which seemed to have a huge colony, and I put one of these in that location (since I had some of these in-ground baits), and they also seemed to disappear.)

Ants munch this up.You can make corn syrup with boric acid in old water bottles with a hole cut in top.fltten bottle so wind doesn't roll it over.

Going to try your refill the stations idea for around the pool. Tired of making my own ugly diy "old sour cream plastic tray" stations. Hope these are easy to refill and I'll experiment with the ratio of borax, powdered sugar & water to see what works best

How well do the stakes work? Just place them around your house?

Not sure of the radius these work in but I used them for a small ant-heavy area of flower bed and sidewalk areas and they worked. I think I changed it out to a fresh one after a couple weeks.

I've used 100's of these, they don't do much of anything. People think they work because ant activity is hugely increased around the bait.

My wife still uses them. She had 5 of them out in the kitchen. Ants everywhere.

Sprinkled ambro ant block around the entire perimeter of my house, like right next to the foundation wall, and dozens of visible colonies were eradicated within a week. We stopped getting ants in the house after one day.

Love these products, but deer always eat and destroy these, even without that, find them to be completely ignored by most populations of ants. The indoor liquid traps seem to do better.

Do you know if Bifen XTS is as effective as Taurus SC as in geting rid of ants?
I've heard good things about Bifen but I have never tried it. I've had excellent results with Taurus SC however.

Taurus SC also kills many other insects and you are in essence creating a virtual wall/barrier around your home when using it. I spray in late April then again late July and I don't see ants at all anymore for over 2 years now.

Taurus SC seems expensive at first but a 20 ounce bottle should last you for over 3 years. (My bottle is about half gone and I'm on my third year of using it). Ergo, it is the most long-term cost effective solution IMO.

Quote from DallasGG :
Decided to try the Taurus SC around my foundation for ants, so ordered some online. Ants are big problem in the spring/summer in the Dallas, TX area. It's expensive stuff but if it works it will have been worth it!
I live in Maine and spray twice a year (Late April and late July) and it has resolved my ant problem and then some. I also spray around the eaves of my roof where I noticed wasp and hornet nest 2 years before.

The results have been remarkable; for over 2 years now my home has been ant and wasp/hornet free. I also had some lady and elder bugs in the spring inside my home but that stopped since I started spraying with Taurus SC

Just make sure you respect the power and toxicity of Taurus SC. Don't spray indoor areas, attics or basements. Wear protective eyewear, gloves and a N95 mask. Never spray on a windy day and avoid spraying near flowering plants that rely on pollination from bees as it will kill them and their hives.
