I came across the same article as posted earlier by @EnsuingRequiem, so its all about writing data to disk performance(not to worry about read).

CMR write performance is great, SMR(cheaper drive) by its design has slower write performance so SMR could be a good economical choice when you don't write/rewrite constantly to disk and mostly about reading data once the data is written so use case dependent. Though as said earlier NAS/RAID situation better to use CMR drive.

Linus [youtube.com]explained it well in his youtube video [youtube.com], disclaimer, I am watching deals on storage here just to buy cheap storage to backup files or collected media not really building NAS or high performance system.

SMR drives are cheaper than CMR hard drives. SMR hard drives are a good choice if they are primarily used for data storage or PCs where large hard drives are used to store data. They offer more storage capacity and are more energy-efficient than CMRs, making them ideal for archiving tasks.

This was first of the SMR thrash-and-trash models. Can confirm it does not even rate in mirror/RAID 1, but probably is serviceable in a non-RAID or checksumming config and performs like a WD Blue (so why put the Red branding on it?)
