Agreed! I've actually been waiting for one to go on sale at a decent price. Importing medical records (had to do that for a second opinion recently), burning classic games for CD based consoles, ripping CDs and DVDs for Plex, etc. Just because people don't do these things doesn't mean other people don't have very valid and frequent uses for things. I'm glad some people on here see that rather than threadcrap on other people's purchases and posts.

$20 at Target with free shipping and 5% off. With Red card. Not the greatest reviews though.

afaik, and someone may correct me on this, but the lasers used for reading/writing dvd and br are separate, as they're different wavelengths, so theoretically one shouldn't affect the other..but my current external bd drive seems to do poorly on dvd+r, but fine on dvd+r dl and any writable bd and bd dl
Originally they were separated for multi-format drives, but later they introduced a hybrid laser diode for mass production that could do both, abeit not nearly as well as separate diodes that emitted only the original designed wavelengths. This could easily be part of the problem you're having, the hybrids can do both, but neither very well. You don't really have to worry about the diodes to be honest, the drive will have some other mechanical electrical failure long before the diode becomes an issue.

Slightly off-topic - Does any recommend a PC case with room for an internal DVD drive?

What type of time machine are you using?

Oof. I'm genuinely surprised that people are still using optical media.
The last time I bought a USB CD / DVD+ drive was in 2008 when I bought two external drives for $14 each. They were on clearance on NewEgg because even back then people weren't buying them anymore and new it was getting rid of the majority of their CD/DVD/DL inventories.

I bought 3 cases of 4x100 spool discs of dynex brand dual layer DVDs from Best buy years and years(maybe 16 years?) ago during a Black Friday sale. I think they were $20 each? Despite giving six spools away to friends and family, and using them at almost every chance I could, I still only went barely through three spools (downloading Linux isos!) before the technology became obsolete.

With the price, speed and functionality of newer storage devices like USB 3.0 nvme, I can't imagine taking the time to put data on to a CD, label and then store it. If you're looking for archival storage, it's actually much better and much more reliable to store data redundantly on a mirrored partition platter hard drive, or mirrored on multiple drives with parity recovery.

If you were going to put stuff on it to give to someone, with internet speeds being what they are today, it's probably faster for somebody to simply download the same 650 MB-4.5 GB directly.

Who uses these drives and optical media today? What do you do with them?

Ditto, plus I just ripped a couple CDs that were locally produced to put onto a thumb drive. It was the second time I did that since 2009.

For me, to import medical images. A lot of hospital PACS in the area still write out DVDs for transfer between hospital systems since they're cheaper than giving every patient a USB drive and more secure than asking patients to bring their own virus-laden USBs to plug into a computer connected to the hospital network.

Not discounting any use cases but I'd be surprised if you didn't at least have a 720p/1080p TV, in which case, bluray could still be a better fit.

I actually have this and it works great. It feels pretty cheap but it simply works perfectly fine. I do recommend it. I have a huge digital DVD movie collection. The DVD digital movies/shows look nice on my HD 1080p televisions. I don't burn movie DVDs to blank discs. I have 2 laptops that don't have any hard drives so for only $20, it is nice to have this option if needed.
