I've had this for 3 years. The app is a little clunky, but has some nice features like integrating weather info to suspend watering during rain, etc. I'm happy with it, overall.

Not OP, but I've been using the 12 zone version for years and have had no issues with it. Was simple to set up, app is stable, lets you add lots of metadata about to tune smart watering, integrated with Alexa & HomeAssistant, etc. I was able to consolidate two old Rainbird controllers into it, and overall I am very happy with it.

Make sure to check if your water district offers a rebate! Some ask for pictures of your previous system set up so grab those before you install.

I built one with 3 zones using Meross outdoor 3-prong smart plug. Been using for last 2 yrs, no issues. You only need a solenoid per zone which is available for $10 on Amzn and can have as many zones as you need. Just a DIY/RdNk method of doing it and it has its quirks.

I don't think it's that bad. Initial setup was a little non-intuitive but once you're setup scheduling, manual watering for testing and the notifications when it finishes or if there's a rain delay is pretty straight forward.
I have had a few cases where it times out trying to manually start but those have been few and far between.

Just get a rachio on sale... Even the first gen rachios, if you bought a used one, work great.

I've had multiple gens of rachio across three houses, they're great.

Once you set it up there is no need for the app. I set mine up 18 months ago and it's been working perfectly. If you like, you get a notification when watering starts and stops.
Note: The majority of utility companies will pay half the cost of the unit.
