The 5600G has 16MB of cache instead of 32MB on the 5600, and only supports PCI Express 3.

Just keep in mind that this will be the last one that you can upgrade using your current hardware. Next cycle you'll be needing a new motherboard and memory. Gotta give AMD props for keeping board combability over the years, but it's time to move forward with AM5.

Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X could be the last upgrade with AM4 when the price come down.
With the mid $100 price range, it worth to upgrade from 2700X since you can see about 25% performance improvement from 2700X

Also from 105W to 65W, you will have almost 50% power saving. These days, your energy bill is getting high but you could save $ with Elec. bill while you enjoy faster CPU.

"At 1080p with a modest GPU, the 5600 is 14% faster than a 3600"

Also, the 5600G is noticeably slower than the 5600. AMD is not like Intel where the APU is equivalent to the similarly named model.

I have a i5-5400. Recently inherited a GTX 1080 from a friend. Would this R5 5600 be a big improvement? I do play a few simulator games at times but nothing hard core.

It be a pretty big upgrade for gaming.

But if you can wait another 4-5 months AMDs 7000 series AM5 chips will be coming out. Those use DDR5 and a few other goodies.

So uinless you already haqve a AM4 board and DDR4 memory that works best to wait. Just overlock your currnet system a little to help hold you off. I went from a i7-3770 to AMD and it was a good leap better.

Might be best to define "cheap" and what games you want to play.

Currently running a I7-7700k unRaid server with plex, I'm using a P4000 for HW transcoding so I don't need quick sync. Anyone see any benefit getting something like this just for the additional 2 cores and it being newer?

I keep wanting to upgrade my 2700x … but it's still so good in 2022, I may just wait another cycle …
Same. I'll just wait out another year or two before building something new.

No for the most part. There a 2 things to be wary about.

Most importantly, you may run into issues regarding bios compatibility if it has never had an update. If you have an older AM4 CPU, make sure to update the BIOS before switching. I am not sure if DS3H has the ability to perform flashback.

Secondly, B450 boards do not have support for PCIe gen 4. For most cases this means nothing as unless you are moving actual boatloads of data. Just be aware as to not buy a gen 4 drive.

Not really.

Overclock what you have and later this year should have all the new stuff. Worse case the older stuff, 5000 will be older then, should be cheaper.

GPUs are also still dropping. Newegg is really trying to dump their currnet inventory from all their GPU e-mails I get.

I have a 1600 af from when it was $85 running @3.9GHz with a 1070; I really got it as a stop gap at the time. Should I be looking at this as a value upgrade?
Yes. Do it.

With cooler you can sell the 2700x around $120 on ebay which will net about $100 after shipping and fees. For $50 out of pocket its about a 20% uplift in performance.
