So this 3% cash back is a little too restrictive to be worthwhile. I've had this card for awhile and started using it again thinking it'd be fairly straightforward -- it is not! I've used it at three different online clothing retailers and all transactions only got 1% cash back. The only transaction that returned the appropriate 3% was walmart.com.
I spoke with an Amex rep about this and, as I suspected, this is due to the MCC codes that certain retailers use. Amex is being way to restrictive with the MCC codes that they count as "retail" for this card, so good luck getting 3% cash back unless it's for big merchants like walmart.com.

come over to usalliance.org where the 3% card doesn't care about mcc codes. they are not trying to cheat you or be deceptive. you get 3% on every single purchase whether its at mcdonalds, walmart.com, or your library fees. everything. from today until whenever they're done. you can spend $3 or $300 or $30,000....no cap, no limits. the only time i visit my online account is every quarter to apply my $$$ as a statement credit. it's the only true 3% cb card.
For Kroger, I buy a Kroger gift card instore for a grocery purchase and then use at pump. Kroger does not code as gas or grocery at the pump.
False, the Kroger gasoline purchase at the pump is clearly labeled as gas purchase. I use BoA card at Kroger gas pump, all are accurately catalogued cashback as gas station

It depends on the card. Citibank Costco, AMEX and Discover, just to name a few will not code these as gas.

Nope! discover and amex also well recognized Kroger pump purchase as gas station .
Should be no difference with Citi Costco visa card, they are going to the same Visa network as BoA Visa cash rewards card
is this one of the first general 3% shots fired? i remember when 2% was the target and fidelity led the way.
still not as good as my credit card which is 3% on everything, everywhere, unlimited. i spend 80% of my purchases online so this deal would be ok if i didn't have u.s. alliance
Correct me if I'm wrong but that 3% back is only until the end of the year, at which point it will revert to 2%. Certainly not worth a membership and credit pull. If Cashback is your end game, a simple churn of one or two cards will easily net you more in a year of general spend. If you're looking for higher long term Cashback, I would recommend Citibank custom cash, one for each major category of spend. And a 2% card to fill in the blanks

why would anyone use platinum when you can get 3% back on this?
Can anyone give feedback on this? I'm figuring out which AMEX should be my first one (just got offers in the mail for gold and platinum) but this deal is tempting?

It must be hard to turn down a $250 annual fee and what is the Platinum around $695 annual fee. Which is what brings me to the Amex blue cash everyday card. Why are you asking questions about no annual fee cards?
Hmm I've been using my AMEX Blue with 3% CB for Grocery for at least 10 years already (until there's a 5% CB quarter from my other CC cards). So it's nothing new, perhaps the 3% CB for gas is new
