Bare drives that are guaranteed to be reds and will have their warranty intact when used in your Synology carry a premium over the shuck of the draw drives you get out of externals.

Used to be but not recently. There have been several $15/TB WD Red Plus deals (or $15/tb + $10) in the last month. The only reason to get externals for shucking with this environment is if you want an enterprise drive or the external price goes down (which is likely as higher capacity SMR drives start to appear which you might not want).

Looking for CMR and 5400RPM. Are there any other Red Plus models?

I thought Red Pro was 7200RPM? Why would Red Plus and Pro be the same then? Confused...

EDIT: while searching found this on reddit. 6TB is 5450RPM

If I'm not mistaken everything above 8TB from WD is made by HGST and is 7200 RPM. You may see words like 5400 RPM class, that likely means 7200. If you want energy efficient, get a helium drive, which is anything 12TB or above.

If I'm not mistaken everything above 8TB from WD is made by HGST and is 7200 RPM. You may see words like 5400 RPM class, that likely means 7200. If you want energy efficient, get a helium drive, which is anything 12TB or above.
High capacity (with high density per platter) drives require high rpms out of necessity to maintain similar performance as the lower capacity drives in the line. Same with Seagate too.

The difference between Red plus and Red Pro is not just RPM. The latter are designed and tuned for much more strenuous continuous use.

1. Why does the OP say Western Digital via Newegg when it is sold and shipped by Newegg? Is this because of the bad reputation Newegg has?

2. The title for the product on the Newegg page says OEM. Typically, WD does not provide direct warranties for OEM drives. Does this have the warranty or not?

Not sure how you manage that. Just as a backup target, it'd be easy to fill more than 2TB at home I would think between pictures, videos, and music.
We do local backups of phones and machines at home, augmented by cloud backup in case of ransomware or whatever. Because while the cloud is useful, it's just other people's computers. I also like using Macrium for full disk image backups in case I have to restore a drive one day.

If you run a Plex/Emby/Jellyfin/Kodi/etc server, it's also very easy to go well over 2TB between TV shows and Movies. Especially if you like ripping your BluRay collection for easier digital use.
My 10 and 8TB drives are all almost full, it's honestly hard to imagine only having 2TB of data at home in total between backups, personal data, and entertainment media.
