At some point someone found that some of the WD Red 5400 RPM drives were actually 7200 rpm drives. I don't see this one on the list.

Why that's important: if you're adding these to your NAS and you have other WD Reds that are actually 7200 rpm, you'll probably be slowing down the array.

Can I use these in a desktop for backup storage or are they really only meant for NAS devices?

I believe you can, but from what I understand they're designed to run 24/7, so they might not like you powering it off and on every day or multiple times per day. Also there's some differences how they deal with potentially bad sector (TLER). I'd probably only use it in a desktop that's running almost 24/7 anyway.

I bougth one WD Red Plus 4TB and also a Synology 2 bay NAS DiskStation DS220j on Amazon at (-32%) $149.59
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0855LMP81
My only concern with the DS220j is that, as per the first Q&A on the Amazon page, the RAM is not upgradable, so you're stuck with the 512MB it has, and the latest OS requires 1GB. Doesn't that make this device basically obsolete? Is that why the price has dropped on this model?

I was looking for the DS220+ for this reason, but the price is double on that, unfortunately...

Looking to make a home/smallBiz storage solution for my videos.
Do you guys recommend synology (2-bay) or some other free nas software with 2 drives to make my own system? Any links or forums that can help me find the right solution, please guide.

My post in the Synology thread...

I purchased a DS120j which has inferior specs to this and it runs the latest software (7.2) just fine, I'm sure this will work without any issues. It's not meant to be some power house but for a entry unit into NAS it is pretty well regarded.

Good to know, thanks for the clarification!

So why does Synology supposedly say the latest is not usable on <1GB RAM? Did you do something special to get it to install, is the info just incorrect?

Yes, said 1 to 2 days so I am still waiting
Just be sure you verify the value of the "gift card (not a price adjustment)" and spend it quickly. I had one that was about a year old from the great NoEgg rebate scandal that was "invalid" when I tried to divest myself form those crooks. It was bad enough I was not getting the prepaid Visa card due me but offered a useless store gift card that was invalid. That was the final straw for me. Never again NoEgg. This was years before the returns scandal Gamer Nexus pointed out last year and the GPU scandal from this month.

The reviews of DOA or the drives failing after minimal use should be Alarming!

It automatically installed when I was setting it up, even got an update today to the newest 7.1xxd and still works fine. This one is quad core and faster ram so I think it should be okay but I only am using it to save photos and videos so my needs are pretty basic.

I upgraded to a Synology 920+ so I picked up 4 of these from Amazon "Used, very good" for $59/ea. I was fully prepared to return them if they had too much use but they were manufactured 3 months prior to me buying them and have been running steady for a couple months now with no issues. At the time there wasn't a price like this going, I'd definitely buy at $70 but I don't regret my purchase. Great drives!
