Just be prepared for the possibility of receiving damaged drives. NewEgg does crappy packing. I won't buy drives from them.

They're regular drives, just have some firmware optimization for big arrays and better resiliency against vibrations from adjacent drives. I have seven of the X10 in my system, and they're just regular SATA and power.

Yep. Consumer SATA drives are normally in the high 20's dB for noise. This drive is 32dB to 34dB. Remember decibels are logarithmic so this isn't as small a difference as it seems.

Do you wait for Seagate refurb? Or is their seller refurb just as good?
Seller refurb is usually "code" for used.

serverpartsdeals located in florida , no tax if lived outside the state

It is recertified by seagate with a 2 year warranty. Very reputable by seller since they get 1000s of these drives a month from seagate

X18 14TB has more platters, is faster than the X16 and more reliable
It's 9MB/sec faster. Less than 4%. Big whoop. There is 0 evidence that the X18 is more reliable than the X16. There is a lot of evidence that the 14TB X16 is more reliable than the 14TB X14.

BTW, how are there so many recertified/refurbished drives a month if they're so reliable?

It's important to remember that perception of sound isn't linear, so while it's technically a lot louder, it doesn't sound it. For instance, 20 decibels is 10x as loud as 10 decibels, but it's only perceived to be about 2x as loud. And a 1-3 decibel difference is basically imperceptible to most people. Going from 29 decibels to 32 decibels will sound exactly as small a difference as it seems.

It's going from around 27 to 32 and 29 to 34 (idle, seek), so it's a 50% increase in perceived sound. That's not a small difference.

I do not know where other sellers get their drives to resell.
The store I posted gets them from Seagate and are recertified from Seagate and sold to the seller. The drive comes with a 2 year warranty through the seller/manufacture since they probably have a great partnership with seagate.
If you buy refurbished its through the seller only which is a 90 day warranty.

again the X18 is better and a newer model than the X16. There is proof on the web that is better built drive and would not make sense to release a CMR drive that is worse than the predecessor, especially when these enterprise drives are sold in the hundreds of thousands to data centers. They dont even make the X16 anymore LMAO

If i had the choice to get a drive now it would be
X18 14TB
X18 18TB

If I wanted to save money but have more storage I would get a X16 16TB , it would mean lower speeds and have less platters than the X18

They even have 18TB X20 and 20Tb X20 out now. I am not wasting 400-500 bucks though, even if they were on sale for 300-350 I would wait until the price drops to 250.

I know what i am talking about ,
Hitachi and WD are great drives and equal to seagate. A home user will never see the difference on how many drives or what drives die in the future unless you are running several petabytes . Like i said I own over 2000TB , have 2 unraid servers, and several desktop PCs running 24/7 and only had , one 18TB X18 Seagate CMR die "died within 2 days" and have had a few SMR drives die over the years.

If a drive fails it will be within a week after you write several TB to it. SMR drives seem to just randomly die when reading and writing they are POS and thats why Target, bestbuy, staples, walmart , officemax , love to carry these things , because they are probably marked up 50-100%

Not sure he knows what he is talking about. It clearly says SATA. Uses SATA to power the drive.
The WD HC530 drives have the 3.3v power issue, a standard SATA power plug doesn't work. You either have to tape off one of the pins on the drive, or you have to convert the power supply's sata connector to Molex and then back to SATA for the drive to power up. Just fyi. I'm not familiar if the Seagate enterprise have the same setup.

i build a ton of systems for people, in the past, had no real issues with newegg and would use them when the price was right. now, i go out of my way to avoid newegg. once Hangzhou got control of newegg in 2016, they quickly started to slide in quality and reliability. newegg has done some shady things over the past 5 years. newegg is very much a "buyer beware" experience now. even ebay affords you more protection on their purchases.
Completely agree. Newegg was the defacto place. Now, it's eBay, Microcenter (for new build components, there are no better prices out there on mobo/cpu/ram combos) and then Amazon.

Forgot to mention , he asked why so many recertified drives from seagate? Well probably because seagate does more sales , and data centers are buying them up.
Either way they have a 2 year warranty and hell alot cheaper than 99% of the slick deals out here.

Id rather pay no tax too.
If you can get me 18TB for under 250.00 where i can shuck it , i would be in , but good luck with that when you go to get warranty. You will most likely be denied. Try shucking a best buy WD enclosure and putting it back without breaking clips. When you send it in they will see this and deny you warranty.
Seagate enclosures are easy to shuck and next to impossible to screw it up when you take it apart.

Id 100% go with seagate enclosures as sometimes I actually got 10TB /12TB Ironwolf drives in them.

Consumers and Enterprise data centers buy Seagate
Seagate controlled 43% of the HDD market last year, according to Coughlin Associates, while WD ranked second with a 36% share.

all hdds brands will have the 3.3v pin that disables the drives. You have to buy sata power connectors or use kapton tape. I use tweezers and just lift the pin and take it out.
If you are using a NAS i.e. synology , or supermicro backplane, the drive will work fine with the pin. In a desktop you will run into the issue where it wont get recognized.

I dont mind amazon or newegg or even micro center. Micro center has a great extended warranty purchase for motherboards. If you bend a cpu pin or mobo pin on the socket they will replace it if you purchased the warranty.
I would not trust amazon , using square trade or whatever they use

also good luck returning something from amazon that is IT related the CIS department will harass you for making a return after awhile. Newegg could be the same. personally if you can buy in store do it , like micro center.

Ebay is great since you are protected by Ebay.

I use the following commands on my Ubuntu to do an extensive read/write to make sure the disk(s) are usable. You can boot to a live cd as well.

cd /dev ; ls # to check which disk is attached.
umount /dev/sd** #where* is the device you're trying to mount
sudo badblocks -b 4096 -wsv /dev/sd** #this is a destructive process, all data will be lost on the target disk. This will give you a piece of mind.
Good tip. Here's a recipe to display a detailed list of drives to make it easier to figure out which drive to run the operation on (in place of looking at /dev):

Code:
lsblk -o NAME,FSTYPE,VENDOR,MODEL,TYPE,SIZE,MOUNTPOINT -e 7
The -e 7 is to exclude loop devices, which I have a ton of due to snaps installed.

I just rip the pin out , tape will fall off, or you can waste money and buy multiple Sata power adapters.
They all should work with the pin install on enterprise JBODs with backplanes, and consumer NASs.

It applies to drives found in the enclosures but not sure about the OEM drives
Ditto. Tape fails, gets sticky, etc. I just removed the pin from the hard drive. A tiny flathead screwdriver and 30 seconds will do it. That was the only time I got a white drive. I got lucky and got reds the other couple of times I shucked a WD external enclosure.

It could be server pulls. Of course, the vendor could put their own returns back into mix also as they don't come in sealed retail boxes.

serverpartdeals also has the option to buy these drives as "Seller Refurbished". Is this website also a marketplace for other sellers? Or are these Seller Refurbished drives only refurb'd by serverpartdeals? If the case is the latter, how is serverpartdeals actually refurbishing them, or are they just returns with 30 days, etc?
