No. This drive tends to freeze when it wants to do some internal maintenance. The freeze periods can be quite long - 10-15 seconds.

For an OS drive you want something with DRAM, like Hynix S31, WD Blue, MX500.
Up until last week I had been using this drive in a Thinkpad X230 for years and not once experienced this behavior.
Same, I've used only DRAM-less SSDs for years as I didn't even know what SSD dram was and just bought the cheapest Samsung and Crucial offerings. people on this site tend to say you NEED relatively expensive features that most people really don't.

What about Crucial P5 (NVMe)?

I think it's because the increase from mechanical spinning platters to a solid state disk is so drastic that you don't notice those minor hiccups. Once you get used to one with proper cache, you will notice it more.

So like anything, buyer beware.

I have no experience with P5. It has a different controller, so it could be more sensible. Search or reddit and see if there is an issue.

That's not true. I was using BX500 as a system drive, and it was locking up way worse than the HDD prior to that. DRAM drives cost about $10 more, and return that handsomely in terms of performance.

While crucial is great brand, the bx serious has low tbw. Go for their MX series. Much much better. Maybe will cost you $15 more but totally worth it.

While it's better to have one with DRAM when using it for an OS drive, it's not totally necessary. I've used plenty of DRAM-less drives as system drives and they usually work adequately. Also, Raspberry Pis are designed to run off Micro-SD cards and generally do a lot less I/O than a regular PC.

That said, I would strongly advise against the Crucial BX500. I too have had the freezing issue and found that the ONLY solution is to wipe the drive and re-write all the data. It is by far the worst SSD I've ever used and truly does slow down well below the speeds of a hard drive. I'd buy one of those cheap no-name drives before I'd buy another one of these.

I moved my system into a more modern case and it only had room for 2 - 3.5 HDD (I had 4).
So I'm using this to replace a 7 year old WD Black with music and pictures on it. Im sure it will be fine for this.

I also added one of the Samsung Refurb m.2 NVMe drives from best buy (980 non pro 1tb $75) So I'm slowly moving away from the 3.5 drives completely.
But the 4TB is gona be an expensive one to replace.

I have used several BX drives. They are probably the best dramless drives on the market. The controllers handle this way better than others. Having said that, if the mx500 is only slightly more expensive, go for that model every time. I would only recommend the BX series for a second computer or cheap laptop or your grand parents computer for which they only use it for email and zoom.
