Newbie here. So how is this different from ceramic joe? Is this good new players like me instead of ceramic?
non-ceramic are usually much lighter so easier to move/transport, but does not retain heat as well. Think of steel pan vs cast iron

Honestly it is extremely efficient. I like the Akorn because of the bottom ash tray removal VS Vacuuming. Mine lasted about 10 years. I also tested a ceramic at one point and was disappointed by it and kept the Akorn. The Akorn gets hot much faster as it doesn't have all of the ceramic to first heat up and again the ash cleanup. Good luck

This thing weighs 95 lbs per their website. Not really light weight

He didn't say it was lightweight. He said it's much lighter than ceramic. Look up the weight of a Kamado Joe or Big Green Egg and compare those numbers to 96 lbs.

I owned this a few years back after picking up a deal here. It's nothing like a real egg, just a cheap imitation that will rust out sooner rather than later.

At this price, if you're really interested in an egg I'd suggest holding this money and waiting on a deal for a ceramic one. It'll be pricy but well worth it.

Some owners complain that once the electronic component fails they grill can't be used.
from what i understand, you can purchase an ash pan with out the fan and use it like the regular akorn. the only difference is, there is no thermometer on the top of this grill. its about 40 dollars on the char griller website

The shape is basically where the similarities end. This will heat up much faster, but temperature retention and stability will be nowhere close. That stands to reason, since ceramic's thermal retention properties are completely different from that of steel. Just look at your typical pizza oven - most are all ceramic, but some are insulated stainless steel but still retain a ceramic bottom. If you made one that was steel all around you would get completely different (and disappointing) performance.

This isn't a bad grill - I had one that rusted out within 5 years, so I wasn't happy with the reliability. But the performance wasn't terrible, just that it was only marginally different than a Weber kettle that was much cheaper and lasted a hell of a lot longer. The ceramic eggs are more expensive and come with their own warts, but if that's what you're after I'd suggest you hold out for one and not compromise here.

Thanks for this exhaustive insight. Did you have it covered from the elements?

You're using too much charcoal if the temps run too high.
Nope, thats not how you control temps on a kamado, learning to shut the vents down is the key to proper temperature control. You can put as little or as much lump charcoal in and can still hit and stay at 225 with proper technique.

Great beginner egg, if you use it a lot you will eventually buy a ceramic egg.
I agree. This price point makes it worth a try. Could probably still sell it for full value if you don't like it. I looked up the grate and it's 19.5" diameter, which is pretty good. I already have 2 ceramic kamados, but love them and use both often.

Yes, it was covered. Conversely, the Weber that still outlives it to this day wasn't and isn't. The thin metal walls inside the egg are the first to go.

I will always post this link because I love my akorn. People who say real ceramics keep heat better are mistaken. Granted, this is a single source but based on how ugly the website is, I trust the source.

The Sam's Club deal on the vision kamado is a far superior deal compared to this junk

That is a really good deal. If it had come about 2 weeks sooner I would have purchased it. I purchased a Masterbuilt 800 from Costco instead. Uses a ton of charcoal compared to the Akorn (as I have the original one) but man is it easy to manage the fire!! Thanks OP for the post.
Dang, same here. I have the original Akorn as well. Real estate gets a bit cramped when you put a few slabs of ribs on. Looking forward to trying the griddle on the 800. Not looking forward to feeding it charcoal.
