Who's using cloud? I use hard drives. I have several copies of the same data.
If one of those copies is offsite from your primary location you should be OK

Brings me back to 2005
This review takes me back to 2005

"I bought this with my new desktop. It has been a month, and I STILL don't know how to use it. I tried calling LG service. and was on hold for 30 minutes (Burning up my phone minutes, I must note! Who's paying for THAT!??!!?) I tried the website, but it said there was "No support info available for SP80NB80 products". There is a disc with it, but no instructions about how to operate anything after you put the disc in. It said it was taking me to the "CLOUD". wherever that is, and I never got another response out of the thing after that point. It just sat there and did nothing."

Until your house burns down. I still burn backups to DVD, but you really need something off-site as well.

Frustrating that movie studios and tech work together to prevent 10 year old technology from working. No UHD support on any PC Blu-ray drives.

Is there a way to get these to work with a chromebook? I have a friend who called me last night looking for one of these for his wife to use with her Chromebook, as that's the only pc they have.

It uses USB connection. As long as the chromebook has a USB port, it will work. The USB-C port will need a adapter.

In all seriousness, it's better to at least get the widest-supporting drive, and get something which can at least PLAY 4k BDs.

DVD is the maligned middle-child of optical formats in 2022. No large audio library or nostalgic value like CDs, and no current-standard support like BD.
Playback of 4k BDs on recent CPUs has been killed:

I suppose you could still rip the discs but what a PITA

I can't my chromebook to play commercial DVDs with one of these, even using VLC in Linux. Research showed ChromeOS does not have a decryption codec needed for that.

Hard drives are not as stable as some high quality disks like M Disks. Im 35. Im wanting something that I feel more confident will last 30 to 40 years to store my family photos. Yeah, you could backup on multiple drives, but there's some maintenance cost, and inspection needed for 10s of thousands of photos and videos
